MARCH 28,1943 ,, THE APPEARANCES AFTER THE RESURRECTION J ohn 20:18 to 21:25
er would come to them through the Person of the Holy Spirit. Being in dwelt by the Holy Spirit, the believers would have discernment sufficient to exercise proper discipline within its bounds in the church of Jesus Christ. II. His D eity (24-29) In T h o m a s’ expression of doubt there is an undesigned proof of the resurrection and deity of our Lord. Thomas was cautious, not easily con vinced, as the record reveals. Eight days after the first incident, the Lord dealt with him, bringing him to the full realization and to public confes sion of both, the literal resurrection and the essential deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Our Lord’s method of dealing with Thomas should be an example to us; it reveals that He is infinitely patient with slow believers, with weak children, with lame sheep. Thomas’ declaration, “My Lord and my ' God,” . received no rebuke from Christ, because it merited none. Sure ly if this were blasphemy—which it would be if it were not true—Thomas would have received either censure or correction. Our Lord’s silence indi cates His agreement with the fact and His rightful acceptance ©f worship be longing to God. in. His R ecord (30, 31) The Gospel by John sometimes is called the “sign gospel.” «It contains many signs, each one calculated to reveal our Lord’s essential deity, as well as His humanity. He is the God- Man, perfect God and perfect Man, in whom alone the true and livipg God is revealed. When He is seen, then God is seen (John 14:6-9). Count less signs were manifested, but all were not written by John. But a suf ficient number" are written to clearly reveal the Lord Jesus Christ, the only Saviour of men. His saving grace and power come through just one channel: it is faith, or belief, or trust, or acceptance, in and of Himself. No sin, iniquity, or other evil can hinder a soul’s being saved when once faith in Christ is exercised, when once He is trusted as
John 20:19 Then the same day at eve ning, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where tlje dis ciples were assembled for fear o f , the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 20 And when he had so said, he showed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord; 21 Then said Jesns to them again, Peace be unto you« as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. 22 And when he had s a i d this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: 23 Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained. 24 Bnt „Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymns, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefpre said unto him, W e have seen the Lord. Bnt he said onto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26 And after eight days again his dis ciples were within, and Thomas w i*t h \thcm: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto yon. 27 Then saith he to .Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my "-side; and be not faithless, but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said un to him, My Lord and my God. 29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, be cause thou hast seen me, thou hast be lieved: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. 30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31 But t h e s e are written, that ye might believe thdt Jesns is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. LESSON TEXT : John 20:19-31. GOLDEN TEXT : «I am alive for ever more” (Rev. 1:18). DEVOTIONAL READING: P*a. 16. , Outline and Exposition I. His R esurrection (19-23) S HE RECORDS of the several ap pearances of the r i s e n Lord should be considered with this lesson (cf. Matt. 28:8-10; Lk. 24:13-31, 34; John 20:14-23, 26; 21; Acts 7:56; 1 Cor. 15:6-8; Rev. 1). Christ’s resurrection gave the dis ciples freedom from the fear which possessed them when He died. Ap pearing in their midst, He assured them of His mighty victory over death and the grave; they need no longer fear anything the Romans could do. His resurrection ga!ve them peace— peace based on the knowledge of sins forgiven, d e a t h overcome, and the grave robbed of its victim. Rightly He could say twice over, “Peace be unto you.” Little wonder that ’‘then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.” The fact of peace was founded upon His word; the basis for it was founded upon His work. His resurrection brought them a commission. They were sent into the world, even as He had been sent. Pow-
