whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Rom. 10:14). The whole wide world for Jesus! This shall our watchword be; Upon the highest mountain, Down by the widest sea; The whole wide world for Jesus! To him shall all men bow, In city or in prairie The world for Jesus now! The whole wide world for Jesus Inspires us with 'the thought That all God’s wandering children Have by His love been sought. The whole wide world for Jesus! O faint not by the way! The. cross shall, surely conquer Ih this our glorious day. —J. Dempster Hammond. 22. Our Debt “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to min ister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Mk. 10:45). People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa. Can that be called a sacri fice which is simply paid back as a small part of a great debt owing to our God, which we can never re pay? . . . I never made a sacrifice. Of this we ought not to talk when we remember t h e g r e a t sacrifice which He made who left His Father’s throne on high to give Himself for us.—David Livingstone. 23. No Shelves for Soldiers ‘ “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh (for the weapons of pur warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strong holds)” (2 Cor. 10:3, 4, R.*V.). There is no discharge in our war fare . . . We may be called to serve on the visible field, going continually into the invisible, both to renew our strength and to fight the kind of battle that can only be fought there. Or, we may be called off the visible altogether for a while, and drawn deep into the invisible. That dreary word “laid aside” is never for us; we are soldiers of the King of kings. Soldiers are not shelved. —Amy Carmichael. Buying Up Time “Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come” (Mk. 14:41). Our Lord said this to prepare His disciples for the days ahead. He had had a rough time; He was disliked by many and loved by few; perse- 24.

The name of His correcting rod is love. When the winds are high, and the storm is raging, may we whisper, “It is because He loves me.” When the storm has passed I shall be poorer, I may be sure, but richer toward heav en. I may have lost my earthly treas ures, but God n e v e r takes without replacing, and who exchanges with God is rich indeed ... . We are baffled to fight better.—Leonard Harris. 18. The Heavenly Visitor “He hath visited and redeemed his people” (Lk. 1:68). What a beautiful thought it is that God pays visits to His people in this world! Every time His children are in trouble He comes to help them. They do not always know it for He comes unseen, and often so softly and silently that people do not know that they have such a glorious visitor within their doors . . . When Christ comes, it is always to do us good; and we shall rob ourselves if we ever keep Him out or refuse His visit. —J. R. Miller. 19. God-Directed Love “The Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ” (2 Thess. 3:5). Love in the Scriptural sense is the deliberate purpose to forget oneself in the interests of others. This is what the apostle means when - he prays for his readers that the Lord might direct their hearts into the love of God, that is, into loving as God loves. To love others as God loves us is then the whole duty of man. —C. F. Hogg. 20. The Place of Abiding “Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the wash ing of water by the word” (Eph. 5:25, 26). ,In sanctification what becomes of the old nature? Many people are somewhat unduly concerned to know if it can be killed outright, and seem to desire a sort of certificate of its death and burial. It is enough to know that it is without and Christ is within. It may show itself again, and even knock at the door and plead for admittance, but it is forever out side while we abide in Him. “Who soever abideth in him sinneth not” (1 John 3:6).—A. B. Simpson. Our World Audience “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of 21.
