THE

WORDS FROM THE CHAIRMAN

It is with great pleasure that I officially welcome you to the release of the 2019 edition of the Asian Wine Review. Now in its fourth edition, the publication has matured and steadily become a leading voice for Asian winemakers looking to present their brands to wine and hospitality professionals across the globe. The 2019 wine submissions are on par with previous years however the number of countries represented in the review has increased to twelve. It is with great pleasure that we welcome the inaugural submissions from Kazakhstan and Armenia. With Asian winemakers growing in international credibility the demand in the trade for educational opportunities has elevated. This

interest sees the results of two significant exhibition partnerships in 2018; ProWine Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong) and Sitevinitech (Ningxia, China). Both of the exhibitions provide an opportunity for the Asian Wine Review team and its award-winning winemakers a chance to host technical forums and masterclasses. These partnerships are an important tool for winemakers and brand owners looking to build recognition whilst leveraging its Asian Wine Review results to secure commercial opportunities. On reflection, the compilation of the 2019 edition has been very refreshing as I witness a wonderful diversity in wine styles, varietals and countries submissions. The judging panels made up this year with experts who are well versed in Asian wines have identified some outstanding wines from most certainly places you least expect. Furthermore, the increasing acceptance of more adventurous wine styles saw that technically perfect wines did not always reap the top scores. I would like to thank all judges for their efforts and comments. Finally, a special thank you to The Flying Winemaker’s Special Projects team for leading the charge and making this year another success story well worth sharing. Until 2020, happy exploring!

Eddie McDougall, Chairman of Asian Wine Review

1

WHY ASIA MATTERS

As a wine writer, I travel the world to do tastings. My wine trips covered Europe, Australasia, North America, South America and Africa, the only missing continent was Asia. However, things have changed in the past few years, Yamanashi in Japan, Kakheti in Georgia, Hua Hin Hills in Thailand, and China’s Ningxia, Tianjin and Fangshan District started to appear in my calendar. I have to say the Asian wines that I tasted during my early trips were not up to the top international standards, but fifty years ago, nobody could predict that wines from Australia or the United States stand a chance to compete with Old World wines. If you remember well, Chairman of Hong Kong Wine & Spirits Writers Association RONNY LAU

the dramatic “Judgment of Paris” just happened some forty years ago. Nowadays the cult wines from Napa Valley can command prices at least as high as the prestige first growths in Bordeaux, if not higher. Now we have better know-how in viticulture and vinification, with a little help from the state-of-the-art winemaking equipment, to make good wines outside the traditional Old World is no more an impossible mission, and it doesn’t have to take forty or fifty years to show significant changes any more. It’s time to open your mind and taste more Asian wines, some of them have already impressed me deeply, and I’m sure you will feel the same.

Technical Advisor & Winemaker of Hatten Wines and Two Island Wines James Kalleske

Traditional views of the limited number of countries in which quality wines can be made are outdated. Relatively recently new-world wines began to prove this reality, and with awareness and interest at an all-time high among wine consumers, Asia is now showing great potential to deliver interesting, authentic and unique wines to the world. Asia contains countless more countries than many people are aware of, so it has an almost limitless range of climates, soils and microclimates for wine producers to explore. Watch this space, there are very exciting times ahead for Asian wines and world-wide wine consumers!

2

HOW THE AWR IS JUDGED

More than 200 wines from over 50 different Asian wineries were blind tasted for the 2019 edition of the Asian Wine Review. Only wines produced and vinified in the greater region of Asia are allowed to enter the competition. What wines are eligible for the 2019 review ? Samples were submitted directly by the wineries. The wineries in this year’s edition are spread across twelve Asian nations: Armenia, China, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Myanmar, Taiwan and Thailand. Where did the wines for the AWR come from ? The selection of this year’s panel took into account key representation from an all-encompassing perspective of the wine industry. Leaders in the wine industry from on-premise, media and production were equally represented. Full details on the judging panel can be found on page 5. Who reviewed the AWR submissions ? The tasting took place under controlled conditions to eliminate bias. Wines were presented at optimum temperatures following careful storage. Where did we review the wines ? Asia as a whole, already battles misconceptions of its wine offerings. The aim to assist consumers and fellow wine trade workers in confidently identifying the best wines produced in Asia. Therefore, our judges adhere to blind tasting rules to uphold this value. Winery names and regions are not revealed, so that price nor the reputation of the winery has any influence on ratings or evaluation. Why strictly a blind tasting ? The wines were arranged by category: sparkling, white, rosé, red and sweet. Within each category they were then arranged by varietal. Each varietal was arranged by sugar content and percentage of alcohol (based on provided technical information). Judges were split into two groups, with an appointed Panel Chair. Group discussion was encouraged so that group members came to a unanimous score per wine as recorded by the Panel Chair. How were the wines tasted ?

INTRODUCTION

It has been argued that the first wine that was produced in Armenia was over 6,000 years ago. According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus; Armenians had commercial ties with Babylon and sold wine to them. It is believed that the winemaking culture was passed from the Armenian Highlands to Georgia, Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. In 2011, the world’s oldest winery was discovered during excavations in the Areni Complex. It was only 10 years ago that a winemaking renaissance emerged, bringing modern techniques and ideals to the industry, thus increasing their export reach internationally.

INFORMATION

Bringing the modern craft of winemaking back to its birthplace since 2002. Karas Wines is the first commercial endeavour of Tierras de Armenia. Named after the giant clay vessels used continuously in the region for winemaking since ancient times, Karas Wines represents a rebirth of regional viticulture from the land where wine began. Located at an altitude of about 1100 meters above the sea level, the mineral- rich, volcanic and basalt soil of the region provided the perfect climate for vines to grow. Our goal from the start has been to set a new standard for winemaking in Armenia and bring expertise back to the birthplace of wine—and that’s just what we’ve done. The combination of our know-how with Armenia’s gorgeous terroir has been a worthy pursuit.

INTRODUCTION

China has become a powerhouse in terms of wine production and consumption in the last decade and continues to post substantial rises year on year. It has the second largest area under vine in the world (11% of global total), it is now the world’s 6th largest wine producing country and is the fifth largest consumer of wine globally. According to the OIV, the volume of China’s wine imports almost doubled between 2013 and 2017 – to 7.5 million hectolitres – and grew in value by 110% - to US$2.5 billion. However domestically produced wines still dominate the market with a 70% share. The main wine producing regions are Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin and Jilin in the north-east; Ningxia, Xinjang and Gansu in the west; Shanxi and Shaanxi in the centre; and Yunnan in the south.
