In the south of Serbia bell peppers are planted on an area of more than 2,000 hecta- res. Leskovac is recognisable for the old local varieties such as the turšijara , kozji rog or ljuta- ča . Red bell peppers are used to make the best ajvar , a famous speciality, and growers have to this day preserved the seeds that were brought from Turkey seven centuries ago. Particularly valued is an indigenous pepper from the village of Donja Lokošnica. It is arranged on a thread and then dried. At the Days of Peppers event in this village in mid-September, peppers are sold as ground and smashed, while dried ones are offered as “ten connected” or “on the wreath”.
