REVOLUTION AND ITS VICTIMS John Augustus Roebling, bridge constructor, was born in Ger- many in 1806. He left his homeland at the age of 25, wishing to become a farmer in Pennsylvania. Fortunately, his plan did not materialise. Instead of breeding cows, he made three
REVOLUCIJA I NJENE ŽRTVE Džon Ogastus Roubling (ili nem. Radnici su bili uglavnom imigranti, a za opa- Zbog dužine, ali i prelepih kula, smatran je osmim svetskim čudom Due to its length, but also its beautiful tower, it was considered the eighth wonder of the world

He was injured while carrying out initial mea- surements on the shore of the East River. The wound became infected and Roebling died of tetanus in 1869. Only his son, Washington, was sufficien- tly qualified to take over the continuation of works, but he also was not spared from the disease. Like a large part of the workers who built it by descending to the bottom of the East River, he also suffered from decom- pression sickness, so until the finalising of the construction he supervised works throu- gh binoculars from his Brooklyn apartment, sending his wife Emily to relay instructions to the workers. The workers were mostly immigrants, who received two dollars a day for the tough and

Today there is a monument under the bridge dedicated to these brave people who left their lives in the river while connecting the future of the two cities.
