Our selection for March...
In this beautiful and moving novel about family, love, and growing up, Ann Patchett once again proves herself one of America’s finest writers. In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew. Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.

We were delayed in our clean-up efforts until the rain subsided and the ground firmed up. We hired an outside tree company to come in and cut into manageable pieces, most of the trees. This was done so our Maintenance Team could readily haul the downed trees to our selected dump site. We also brought in another company to haul off the very large amounts of tree limbs that needed to be chipped up. We are now at the stage of removing the very large stumps that remain and backfilling the 18 large holes with soil and sod. This will take some time to complete, as we must Power Tamp each large hole in layers so no settling will occur. As far as any other type of damage to the golf course… we are in good shape!! Thank you for your patience as our team continues to make progress.

Three weeks ago, we received very, very strong winds. I have never witnessed anything like that before. I have
experienced wind gusts of up-to and over 60 mph, but never continuous 60+ mph winds for twenty-four straight hours! It was a very dangerous time to be out on the golf course!! Around noon, I took a drive around the course to inspect and see for myself if any trees or other damages were occurring. I was shocked when I saw members still playing golf - THIS IS NOT SAFE - and we need to set a safety policy for the golf course, as it relates to Wind. The Golf and Greens Committee is submitting what we feel to be, a safe high winds closure policy. We know this was an extremely rare event, but just as with lightning, golfer protection and safety are paramount. Once this policy is established, we will post it for members to review. During my inspection tour of the golf course, seven large trees had already blown over. Upon my arri- val back to work the following morning, a total of 18 trees had blown over. Some of these trees were very large and some had fallen across Cart Paths. Fortunately, none of the trees that blew over played an integral part of any golf hole design. Unfortunately, several of the very large trees did offer a very pleasing look to the surrounding landscape. We are currently looking into replacing about 4-5 of these picturesque trees.
