The arts are at the heart of Peckham, and nowhere is this more evident than at Peckham Levels. Once threatened with redevelopment, this former multi-storey car park was boldly repurposed and is now an important community hub; home to creative spaces, studios, a street food hall, and Bold Tendencies, who offer world class performances in a carpark – Peckham’s answer to the Barbican.The CLF Art Cafe in the Bussey Building also hosts a variety of events, and the South London Gallery (SLG) in Peckham Road boasts world-class exhibitions right on your doorstep. Finally, head to Peckhamplex cinema (just £5.99 for any ticket!) which showcases mainstream, arthouse, foreign language and independent films on its six screens. Shopping in Peckham is about variety and affordability, with the main shopping street, Rye Lane, showcasing the diversity of the area.You will find branches of Primark and Peacocks here, and a small shopping centre (the Aylesham Centre) which includes a Poundland and Morrisons. The real joy of Peckham shopping is in the indie and multicultural shops, including
super-local publication The Peckham Peculiar . This is one of London’s most diverse areas, including a large Black British population, with strong West African communities, as well as Caribbean heritage. There are also growing European, Latin American and Asian populations. Arty students, young professionals and working-class families all contribute to the area’s mixed demographic. An excellent choice of local schools and family-friendly amenities mean families choose to stay. Peckham homes range from period properties to new builds, and everything in between. Located in the London Borough of Southwark, just three to four miles from the city centre, Peckham effortlessly balances urban living with easy access to green spaces. Bordered by Camberwell, Nunhead and New Cross, you are a short trip from the capital here, for a fraction of the price. Peckham, rst mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, began life as a rural village, but by the 18th century it was a residential area, popular with wealthy Londoners seeking cleaner air. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century transformed Peckham into a densely populated working-class suburb. In recent decades, the area has undergone regeneration and gained a solid reputation as a wonderfully creative and diverse place to live; “one of the 50 coolest neighbourhoods in the world”, according to Time Out magazine. Peckham is impressively well-connected with Peckham Rye and Queens Road Peckham stations (Zone 2) providing both Overground and National Rail services. Locals are hopeful that the planned Bakerloo Line extension will bring the underground to the area too but, in the meantime, the Bakerloop offers a speedy bus service to Waterloo. Peckham is an area with a strong sense of local identity, evident in the huge range of homegrown events and captured by the
