WOKING GOLF CROQUET ADVANTAGE TOURNAMENT

This tournament will go down in Woking Croquet Club history ….last year we had 1 Junior compe6ng against 15 adults and this year against 11 adults we had 7 juniors ranging from 6‐17 (Ana, Fifi, Emmeline, Julie7e, Mark, Talitha & Simon) The adults (elders) were all extremely

They are, so I am told, becoming quite a formidable opposi6on for the adult players,to whom at 6mes seem to be possibly both impressed and a tad threatened .... and to be fair, I have to say to the many who may not understand this complex game, with its weird terminologies, such as jump shot, scratch players, stalking, golden hoop: landing it

somewhere between the somewhat sinister and Harry Po7er, our group of mixed ages and abili6es all come together on a wet morning to play 4‐6 matches, against their co‐conspirators and elders seemingly quite comfortable with the terms and able to relate to them easily and smoothly. To any unsuspec6ng spectator it is more akin to fishing, for it's a game steeped in history, weirdly silent, with rela6vely, to the untrained eye, no idea to whom the win goes and seemingly no opinions on good shoots or not such a great play, and silence mostly all around where applause is no6ceably absent, except when finally a&er the matches have been played and Sara has conducted her wizardry,

welcoming and not phased at all by these confident youngsters…..I’d like to extend my thanks to them all for being such good sports and a shining example to the youth. Also a huge thank you to our coaching team without whom non of this would be possible….Ian, Sandra, Colin and me (Sara) Wri7en mostly by a non‐playing parent LJ ……..with a few bits of detail added. The day I am told started with 'puddling'. However despite the weather and not to be daunted in the face of adversity the par6cipants of the tournament began to assemble. By 10.30 many were already engaged in ba7le, determined to lay claim to a victory!!

we arrive at medals and trophy and weird rectangular boxes where one can guess at maybe a goblet or perhaps a golden snitch is given, to remember 2nd and of course 1st place. There were, I am told, some absolutely amazing shots, hoop defences, and matches won; all who par6cipated should be so proud of themselves, they put up a good show with

It has to be said that our Woking Croquet Juniors are turning out to be quite a force to be reckoned with....they are a happy, cheerful, jolly lot, who have taken to this sport like ducks to water. Not to be forgo7en, many have only been playing barely 5 months, some a while longer and one a recent addi6on, ages spanning from 6‐17 years.
