FALL BULL & FEMALE SALE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2025 12:00 PM CST . Randolph, Kansas BEEF GENETICS Angus Bulls . Charolais Bulls . Copperhead Bulls . Elite Charolais Females
Anyone can breed numbers—we have tried all along to combine EPDs with udder quality, disposition, structure, mothering ability, and the “cow look”. The cattle in this sale are not extreme in any trait…they are sound, solid, functional genetic seedstock that you can count on.
Cover Photo - Margaret and Jim Morris, Logan, Kansas, have been customers for close to 30 years. Cowherd is high percentage of Fink Angus genetics. Charolais bulls have been used the last several years also. With 20” of rainfall, more drought than not, the cows run on short grass, buffalo, blue gamma and sand love grass. They run 6000 acres of farm ground and grass. Tempera- tures vary greatly in this part of Kansas, from sub zero temps to 110 degrees, blizzards, and drought- they have made it work. Both are graduates of Kansas State University and have a son, Duncan, in aviation in Nebraska, along with daughter, Janet, who is the current Logan High School FFA Ag Education teacher. Janet has an incredible FFA program at Logan High School, completely “out of the box” thinking for her students. Great family. Great folks and has a Fink Border collie that Margaret has trained for several things.

Sale letter from 1993 sale! Anyone can breed numbers - we have tried all along to combine EPDs with udder quality, disposition, structure, mothering ability and the “cow look”. We can’t gamble the future of our cow herd on unproven bulls, and neither can our customers! 32 years later and our vision for fads on extremes hasn’t changed.. Right or wrong. Note in Kris Ringwalls article in the catalog. Average values in several traits may be where commercial producers should be on maternal Angus genetics! Our Charolais program is built on generations (since 2000) of proven, tested genetics. We tend to select more for mod- erate birth (with the right size bone) growth, ribeye, and marbling. Maternal is watched, but not chased, the results are the ability to grow and have muscle with quality in the end. Docility, fertility, and structure are very important also. Copperheads are the result of AI or ET. No slippage on ge- netics on them either. We have passed up a lot of money by not chasing and play- ing games of extremes for nearly 45 years. Don’t plan to start now. Thanks for keeping us in the seedstock business. We will do our best to provide genetics producers can rely on. Work is being done quickly on “updating” the current yield grade system that was developed in the 1960s. That’s only 65 years ago!! When completed it will change some things. Galen PS - We are hosting the National Angus tour on October 31, 2025. If you would like to attend our stop please let us know for RSVP for the noon meal.

This has proven to be a workable option for both parties. We believe the beef business is about working together. In some cases the breeders may show other than Fink on the registration certificate, but rest assured they are guaranteed with the same genetics, service and conditions. Strategic Planning
Yes, we keep rerunning this every sale. It’s always worth re-reading and thinking about!
Make a great maternal herd the ranch level. The cows have these characteristics: very good fertility, longevity, good udders, good feet and legs providing good locomotion, dis- ease and parasite resistance, calving ease; young age at puberty, good dis- position, and great mothering ability. Several steps can be taken to im- prove maternal traits in herds:
I am aware of only a few great maternal herds. I am sure there are some of which I am unaware. However, there are not nearly enough. By great maternal herds I mean those that achieve pregnancy rates of 92% to 96% through good years and bad, with little hay feed- ing and minimal supplementation of protein and minerals. There are many herds that get good conception rates through reli- ance on much winter hay feeding, and good doses of supplemental pro- tein and minerals, and sometimes even grain and total mixed rations. Those are not great maternal herds because there is a high probability that they are unprofitable — espe- cially in the tough years. As I continue to work as a speak- er for livestock producer meetings, I hear more and more stories of herds where conception rates were in a range of 90% to 96% a decade or two ago. Now they struggle to get con- ception rates exceeding 80%. As I question further, it becomes apparent that their cows have got- ten too big, are trying to produce more milk than their environments will allow, and have too little or even no heterosis. These cows have lower body condition in spite of often being fed much more in the wintertime. The owners are now either running fewer cows or buying more feed. The great maternal herds are those that are more profitable at
• Over time, reduce dependence on fed feeds and supplementation. • Keep most of the heifer calves and expose them to bulls and — per- haps over several years — shorten the breeding season to as little as 24 days. • For cows, gradually, shorten the calving season to 30 days, but don’t shorten the breeding season. Create the discipline to cull the late-calving or late-bred cows before the next calving season. • To make good maternal cows, only select bulls whose dams always calve as a result of first-cycle concep- tion. If you select a bull from a first- calf heifer, ensure she also calved in the first cycle as a 3-year-old before making the selection. Then, stick to the cow-culling pro- tocol: opens, dries, those with bad dispositions, those requiring individ- ual attention, those that raise poor calves, and ugly ones (your defini- tion, but don’t be too tough). Even in good herds, opens and dries make up most of the culls. If you routinely cull the others, you won’t have many to cull in any given year — and you will like your herd. This does not mean lots of milk, but the ability to deliver a healthy calf, stay mothered on pasture moves or long drives, and teach the calf to eat and live in its environment. These cows may not wean the big- gest calves, but the calves grow well for the environment in which they are raised. While the calves may not perform as well in the feedlot as ter- minal-sired calves, they should have very acceptable growth rates and feed conversion if they are slaugh- tered on time. The calves may even excel for the grass-fed niche. The great maternal herds are characterized by cows that get preg- nant as yearlings and again as 2-year-olds. They are good mothers raising good calves to an acceptable weaning weight. They maintain good body condition, using mostly grazed feed with minimal supplementation. Because of their self-sufficiency, they enable a significant reduc- tion in the need for overheads such as calving facilities and tools, and haymaking and feeding equipment along with labor and fuel. Such herds produce increased turnover resulting from their innate fertility and survivability.

Angus Bull Introduction
Fink Angus Program ~ Since 1977 We have seen all the extremes in the beef industry. Every extreme, every time, has led commercial producers down the wrong road. The trouble is generation turnover in the cattle industry is slow. When several problems appear due to extremes, plugging all the holes takes 4 more generations of “Flex Tape” to TRY to fix - problems will still be there ready to pop out. We have tried to stay in the middle of the road genetically for over 40 years. Balanced genetics that we feel are the most profit-making long term, for everyone. Right or wrong, that’s the program. Average EPDs for a “maternal” breed such as Angus may be about right. Take note the $EN, Mature Weight, Scrotal, and Heifer Pregnancy (HP) are as important as “marbling” and yearling weight etc. Producers can go backwards (reg- istered and commercial) chasing single traits, thinking they are going forward. It is very conceivable to gain 100# on mature cow weight in one sire use!! NOT GOOD! Making total improvement and keeping expenses (cow costs) down is the goal for profit. Marbling can be increased quickly with age and days on feed. Is it concerning that feeding time is approximately 60 days longer than it was a few years ago? Weights are increasing and if it’s the form of much more fat on a carcass (which it is) how does that compete with pork, chicken and catfish? Plus it is inefficient! The key is to watch “Fat” EPD also! Yes, it is a fine line, but when all traits are not considered then results may end up going in the wrong direction. If it takes extra fat to produce choice and prime, maybe we better use a Wagyu if that is the only goal and to keep the cowherd sound. Don’t forget the cow! Packers really don’t care about your cowherd. They just want the end product. Remember just a very few years back a lot of promotion was $B! We always called it terminal, now the Angus Association does also. How many commercial producers have “Terminal Genetics” in their herds now? Keep in mind crippled and dead fat cattle close to harvest time don’t add up very well. Always remember ~ * Fertility in the cowherd. * Control of inputs in cowherd. * Structure and longevity. * 1st and foremost for Profit. Fink bulls MUST pass a semen BSE by 14 months - No matter when they are sold or they are CANNED. (Highly related to female fertility). Progressive Cattle Podcast “I don’t know who said it, but it says ‘the problems we see today can’t be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.’ And I think we’re at a place now with ranching where we’ve used technology, and we made a lot of progress, or I should say we made a lot of change. We’re certainly productive and sometimes that additional productivity hasn’t been always coupled with greater profitability. And in my opinion, and some people disagree, for many cow-calf operations, I think we’ve maximized productivity. And there’s some data I think from a number of re- sources that would support that.”

Expect a heifer bull, cow bull, steers that are thick topped at sale time. Many chase for single traits, in every breed generally end up being a wreck. Purebred breeders, for decades, have been guilty of single trait selec- tion, whatever the trait is. Commercial producers get caught in a web - our statement 40 years ago was balance in all areas, that hasn’t changed yet, and I doubt if it will!!

Cattle must be sound in many aspects or EPDs don’t make any difference on the road to sale barns.

Every animal in this pedigree is highly proven and a cowmaker. Scrotal, heifer pregnancy, FL (functional longevity) are all great. The bottom line is the cow always starts the process, and if the reproductive parts lack an area of fertility then money is lost, it’s as simple as that. Keep cow fertility high and the rest is easy.

Projected extra growth at YW here but also has projected more mature weight, depends if a producer wants to get a little more pounds out of the cows. This bull could work for that. Every producer knows what cow size works for them.

The EPDs will all appear the same, and will be 1/2 of the sire and 1/2 of the dam. We can- not get DNA on them because Galen forgot to DNA the dam three years ago at flushing and then we lost her (stupid Galen)!!! The “Miss” cow family is known nationwide for producing guts, muscle, cow making sons and daughters. Dam of these bulls had an excellent udder and feet.

A cowmaker with the most important parts to do it with. Moderate framed, that will be plenty big as a mature bull and leave the kind of daughters to stay in business with. The Angus breed can, and have went many directions in the past few years. The long-term we question how bad feet, lower fertility, bad udders and lower longevity adds up to profit for commercial producers? Time will tell, it always does with single trait selection. We like balanced EPDs and proven animals in the pedigree.
Dennis Poss and his grandson in the summer of 2025. Fink Charolais customer for many years. Excellent set of home raised cows!
