of packaging (77 percent) and in reducing food and pack- aging waste (66 percent). Nearly 60 percent look for infor- mation on the recyclability or sustainability of the packag- ing on the products they buy. Consumers in South America primarily engage in ac- tivities that protect and/or preserve nature (48 percent) such as water conservation, planting trees, gardening, and eliminating pollution – a rate that is higher than any other region. Although people in this region still have strong sus- tainable beliefs, values, and behaviors, 41 percent say the places where they typically shop do not sell sustain- able products, compared to 22 percent in Europe and 24 percent in North America. This prevents consumers from adopting additional sustainable behaviors, like purchasing more products with sustainable features. Sustainability plays an important part for North Ameri- can consumers, as well. More than 60 percent consider it important to buy products in recyclable or environmentally friendly packaging and see themselves as environmental- ly aware consumers. However, consumers in North Amer- ica tend to be unsure about which sustainable features to look for in products (28 percent), more than consumers in the other regions. For instance, when asked about words they associate with plastic packaging, most consumers surveyed in North America associated the material with being both recyclable and harmful for the environment. This seems to indicate that consumers would benefit from more information around sustainable products and fea- tures. “There’s a major opportunity here to improve consum- er understanding of sustainability claims,” said Jenny Was- senaar, Chief Sustainability Officer, at Trivium Packaging. “The data in this year’s Buying Green Report shows that consumers are seeking out more information than ever before to improve their understanding of eco-friendly packaging.” “The data in this year’s Buying Green Report presents a strong case that transitioning to sustainable packaging is not only the right decision for the environment but also the right decision for the business,” said Trivium Packaging CEO Michael Mapes. “It’s clear that consumers are pav- ing the way for a sustainable future, and businesses need to listen – external factors like the economy don’t phase the eco-conscious demand. Buyers are looking at the big picture: the survival of our planet. Consumers are turning away from harmful packaging and turning towards sustain- able, recyclable options like metal packaging.” The 2023 Buying Green Report is based on a survey of more than 9,000 consumers across Europe, North Amer- ica, and South America exploring participants’ values and behaviors related to sustainable packaging amid a chang- ing world.
