YOUR ATTORNEY SAYS … EAT MORE TACOS (HERE’S WHERE)
I spend a lot of time driving around St. Louis, and let’s just say I’ve turned lunch breaks into taco treasure hunts more than once. There’s nothing quite like biting into a warm tortilla piled high with perfectly seasoned meat and fresh toppings. Since Oct. 4 is World Taco Day, I’m sharing a few of my personal favorites from around town.
torta ahogada is next-level, the tacos themselves don’t mess around. The meats are perfectly seasoned, and you
can take your pick between flour, corn, and crispy tortillas. I’m partial to corn tortillas with carnitas. You’ll leave happy, full, and maybe with a bottle of their hot sauce to go.
Tacos La Jefa 3301 Meramec St., St. Louis, Missouri
Mi Tierra Bonita Tienda y Taqueria 3203 Collinsville Rd., Fairmont City, Illinois
Located right in the city, Tacos La Jefa is a must-stop if you’re craving birria with its juicy, slow-cooked meat that’s all the rage for good reason. Their tacos are crispy, cheesy, dunkable perfection, and once you try them, you’ll understand why this place made the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s top 100 list. I’ve sent clients, friends, and yes, even opposing counsel here. Nobody’s been disappointed.
Fairmont City might sound like a haul, but from downtown, it’s a straight shot across the river and absolutely worth the quick drive. Mi Tierra Bonita is part grocery store, part taqueria, and 100% the real deal. My advice? Be adventurous. The beef tongue and tripe tacos are a rite of passage here, but if you feel less daring, the chicken and pork are as tender as it gets. Allow me to stray from our taco theme and recommend their fresh cheesy gorditas filled with the creamiest Chihuahua cheese.
La Tejana Taqueria 3149 N. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Ann, Missouri
La Tejana has won me over more than once, but it wasn’t just the tacos that did it. Their chips and salsa might be the best in the area, fresh out of the fryer, golden, glistening, and addictively crisp. Their chorizo taco is the star of the show: spicy, savory, and packed with flavor. It’s got the heat that makes you want to take a breath and go right back in for more.
Taqueria El Bronco 2817 Cherokee St., St. Louis, Missouri
Finally, you can’t talk tacos in St. Louis without mentioning Cherokee Street. El Bronco might not be the flashiest spot on the block, but what it lacks in flair, it makes up for in flavor. Their al pastor is my go-to. The chorizo is a close second, bold and bursting with flavor. And for the brave among you, the brain tacos ( yes, really ) are surprisingly rich and smooth. Whether you’re into seafood, veggie, or meaty classics, this place has something to love. This World Taco Day, I hope you’ll celebrate the way I plan to by hitting the road and hitting up one (or five) of these taco spots. water-resistant, and golden in hue, these fibers became the key to making paper that didn’t crumble at the first drop of rain.

But here’s the twist: Despite the usefulness of Manila hemp, Filipino farmers barely benefited. During its colonization of the Philippines, the U.S. controlled abacá trade and funneled profits away from the source. So, the next time you grab a Manila envelope to stash your paperwork or mail your wares, know you’re holding a slice of history that stood the test of time (and coffee spills). Who knew your office supply drawer had such worldly flair?

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan with olive oil and set aside. 2. Season both sides of chicken breasts with salt and pepper. 3. Set out three shallow bowls. In the first, combine flour and a pinch of salt and pepper. Add the eggs to the second bowl. Mix panko, Parmesan, and ranch seasoning mix in the third bowl. 4. For coating, dip seasoned chicken breasts in flour, coating both sides. Then, dip the chicken in the beaten eggs and, finally, the panko mixture. 5. Place each coated chicken breast in the prepared baking dish. 6. Spray the tops of the chicken with cooking spray. 7. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the chicken reaches 165 F and is golden brown.

ICE CREAM ON DECK! How America Shipped Sweetness to the Front Lines
When it comes to sweet victories, nothing quite compares to ice cream, especially if you’re thousands of miles from home and dodging enemy fire. During the final stretch of World War II, the U.S. Army took dessert diplomacy to a new level with the launch of three massive, concrete-hulled floating freezers designed to deliver joy on a cone. These weren’t your average supply ships. Measuring nearly the length of a football field, these refrigerated barges churned out 500 gallons of ice cream a day, bringing spoonfuls of comfort to troops stationed across the Pacific. Nicknamed BRLs (short for “barge, refrigerated, large”), these floating fortresses of frozen delight also carried loads of meat, fresh produce, eggs, and cheese. But let’s be honest: Everyone came for the ice cream. Whether they were
battling the tropics or homesickness, a scoop of chocolate or vanilla was the perfect morale booster for the troops. Too far from a BRL? No worries. American ingenuity didn’t stop at the shoreline. Aviators on high-altitude flights transformed their B-17 bombers into makeshift ice cream makers by stashing cans of the mixture on board. The vibrations and freezing temperatures worked like a charm, turning turbulent missions into frozen dessert production. These sweet efforts weren’t about indulgence but about reminding the troops of life back home, of simpler pleasures, and that even in war, a little scoop of normalcy could make all the difference. Ice cream may not have won the war, but it certainly made the battlefield a little more bearable.
