Letter from the Director COVID-19 Omicron is surging as I write this in the middle of January on a very blah, overcast day. It’s hard to get excited by anything with the pandemic raging on, having to take our programs virtual again, and having staff and patrons fighting COVID infections. But then I remember how nice spring is going to be when we finish the Nature Play Space and the kids get to plant things in it and play on the equipment. And the latest good news is our storywalk has arrived. We’ve partnered with the City of Benton to install a permanent storywalk at Sunset Park. A storywalk is a fun, educational activity that places a story (literally a book taken apart) along a popular walking route in the community. In the past, we placed them on posts around the library, on the windows of businesses in downtown, and during events in parks. A storywalk helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy activity for both adults and children. All the ones we have done are temporary. This will be our first permanent structure. It is weather-proof and will allow us to change stories. - Patty

Meet the Staff Anna, Branch Library Assistant: Programming Share one thing that you love to do that you get to do nearly every day. Be at home with my husband and dog. What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time? Watch gamers on Twitch and YouTube. What technology innovation made the most impact on your life? GPS. If you had one free hour each day, how would you use it? I would use it to have more Bible study time.

Anna is a Library Assistant with an emphasis in Programming who has been working at the Bryant branch for almost 5 years. You will usually find her helping patrons at the circulation desk and computer lab, or in the back workroom weeding the collection of books so new ones can be ordered, repairing books and DVDs if they are returned needing a new cover or case, and organizing and running the Seed Library. When she is not at work, she enjoys binge watching sci-fi TV shows, baking, reading, gardening, organizing, and playing with her sweet aussiedoodle puppy.

Celebrate Black History Month with these popular new reads by Black authors.

The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris Get Out meets The Devil Wears Prada in this electric debut about the tension that unfurls when two young Black women meet against the starkly white backdrop of New York City Book Publishing.

Find these books and more in our online catalog by visiting www.SalineCountyLibrary.org.

What We’ve Been Reading All These Bodies by Kendare Blake | Reviewed by Public Services Manager, Amanda Fifteen-year-old Marie Catherine Hale is in prison in Black Deer Falls, Minnesota, and she is the only survivor of The Bloodless Murders. But is she a victim or is she an accomplice? And if so, who is responsible for the murders and where is the murderer now? Marie tells her story to Michael Jensen, the seventeen-year-old son of the town sheriff, but can Michael really believe her story? It can’t possibly be true that the murderer is a vampire... right?

I don’t know how to express how much I enjoyed this book, other than the fact that I read it multiple times. Three times to be exact. That’s saying something, isn’t it? It’s so good and the best part is that you actually have no idea what is fact and what is fiction, which is a huge part of the story. It’s up to you to decide what happens to the main characters, Michael and Marie, at the end. Does the story have a happy ending? A sad one? A gruesome one?! One filled with vampires?!! You decide! Some might think this sort of ending is unsatisfactory, but I’m a fan of open-ended books. The story is complete. It does have an end, but it just might not be what you expect. Check it out from the library today! It’s available as a print book found in our YA section or as an e-book or e-audio. (And let me tell you... the audio is STELLAR. You’ll come to know that I read almost all of my books by listening, and this one is one of the best I listened to in 2021.) If you’d like to listen to an in-depth, full-of-spoilers summary and discussion of this book featuring an interview with author Kendare Blake and a separate interview with voice actor and narrator Matt Godfrey, check out Fictional Hangover podcast on your podcast player of choice. Fictional Hangover is a podcast for adults about Young Adult and New Adult books, series, authors and voice actors that is full of spoilers. Each episode features a full summary of the book, a discussion featuring favorite parts, not-so-favorite parts, favorite characters and surprises, a five-question game of Would You Rather based on the book (sometimes played with the author or narrator of the book, sometimes with listeners), and recommendations for similar reads. There is adult content, so listeners beware!
