Marin Alsop © Nancy Horowitz
Robert SCHUMANN (1810–1856) Symphony No. 3 ‘Rhenish’ Symphony No. 4 Re-orchestrated by Gustav Mahler ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra Marin Alsop
Key Features: •
This release completes our edition of Schumann’s symphonies re-orchestrated by Mahler, with volume 1 appearing in October 2022 (8.574429). Mahler’s gentle revisions provide models of tasteful modification that are suited to the larger orchestras of today, but there are surprisingly few recordings of these Mahler re-orchestrations available. • Conductor Marin Alsop is an inspiring and powerful voice in the international music scene whose many Naxos recordings include a complete cycle of Brahms’ symphonies declared ‘extremely powerful, magnificently played, and stunningly recorded’ by Fanfare . Her 8-disc set of the orchestral music of her mentor Leonard Bernstein (8.508018), was considered by ClassicsToday.com to present ‘performances as fine as Bernstein’s own, and sometimes even better’. • An ensemble of international renown, the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra is a paragon of Viennese orchestral tradition. It has recorded widely for the OehmsClassics and Capriccio labels, and its Naxos releases include an ‘inspiring and enjoyable’ ( BBC Music Magazine ) recording of Florence Price’s Third Symphony (8.559897) and, also with Marin Alsop, Henze’s Nachtstücke und Arien (8.574181) in performances that are ‘assured and lyrical’ ( MusicWeb International ).
About Marin Alsop, Conductor Marin Alsop is chief conductor of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, which she leads at Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Musikverein, and on recordings, broadcasts and tours. Alsop is also the music director laureate of the Baltimore Symphony and founded the orchestra’s OrchKids education programme. In 2020 she was appointed music director of the National Orchestral Institute + Festival at the University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and is also the conductor of honour of Brazil’s São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP). The first and only conductor to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, Alsop received the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award and was the first woman to conduct the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms. Robert Schumann’s Fourth Symphony was initially conceived not long after the success of the First , but the dramatic original single-movement version confused audiences, and substantial revisions resulted in the eloquent masterpiece we hear today. This and the Third Symphony owe a great deal to Beethoven, with the ‘ Rhenish ’ sharing much of the joy and effervescence of the ‘Pastoral’ Symphony . Gustav Mahler’s subtle re-orchestrations were made in the light of instrumental innovations and the increase in size of the symphony orchestra towards the beginning of the 20th century, making them ideal for performance today.

Claudio SANTORO (1919–1989) Fantasias Sul América † Sonata for Solo Violin * Emmanuele Baldini, Violin * Soloists of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra † FIRST RECORDING OF COMPLETE COLLECTION Claudio Santoro was one of Brazil’s leading composers, having written a considerable amount of solo, chamber and orchestral music, including arguably the most important symphonic cycle ever written in that country. The fifteen Fantasias Sul América , composed as competition pieces for individual instruments, represent fascinating syntheses of his style heard in compressed form. Freely atonal and highly virtuosic, these pieces are now standard repertoire for Brazilian soloists, and were even used later by Santoro as material for his Symphony No. 12 (Naxos 8.574406). The youthful Sonata for Solo Violin is a work of extraordinary density and experimentation that reveals an aesthetically consistent dialogue with the much later Fantasias . About the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra Founded in 1954, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra has been run by the Osesp Foundation since 2005. Thierry Fischer has been principal conductor and music director since 2020, succeeding Marin Alsop (2012–19). In 2016, the orchestra performed at major European festivals, and in 2019 toured China and Hong Kong. In the same year it launched Carnegie Hall’s All Together: A Global Ode to Joy project, performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with a new Portuguese translation of the Ode to Joy . In 2018, its recording of the symphonies of Villa-Lobos (Naxos 8.506039), conducted by Isaac Karabtchevsky, won CONCERTO magazine’s Grand Prize and the Prêmio da Música Brasileira.

This release is another addition to the ‘The Music of Brazil’ series – a 30-disc survey of Brazilian music, and a joint project between Naxos and the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will be the most comprehensive series of its type on disc. • ‘The performances on this release are excellent – the Goias Philharmonic and Neil Thomson are well equipped to meet the demands of these challenging pieces. This is part of a Naxos series on Brazilian music; with any luck, it will lead to more recordings of Santoro’s symphonies’ wrote American Record Guide on Santoro’s Symphony No. 5 and 7 which can be heard on Naxos 8.574402. • The symphonies of Villa-Lobos – Brazil’s most internationally admired twentieth century composer – are now collected in a box set on Naxos 8.506039; Gramophone wrote ‘Isaac Karabtchevsky directs secure and consistently colourful performances and the sound is excellent’. • Violinist Emmanuele Baldini has been the concertmaster of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra since 2005, and has founded the Osesp Quartet. His Naxos recording of Villa- Lobos’ Violin Sonatas (8.574310) recently received a Latin GRAMMY nomination and a BBC Music Magazine ’s Chamber Choice disc: ‘Emmanuele Baldini… produces an alluring tone that taps into the natural resonances of his instrument and phrases with a natural instinct’.

Ongoing dark obsessions and inner turmoil are undercurrents as family schisms flare up amidst a crumbling empire. These powerful themes and a potent score brimming with fabulous music have combined to establish Elisabeth as the most successful German-language musical of all time. This spectacular open-air event presents Elisabeth at the fabled empress’s real-life home – Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.
Key Features: •
Librettist Michael Kunze and composer Sylvester Levay created a commercial success with their musical Elisabeth . This is a theatrical production that has it all – lavish period costumes, exciting choreography, real dramatic impact and a music score that has a perfect balance between tender lyricism, rousing pop-music ‘hit’ quality and the kind of emotionally exhilarating experience that leaves audiences wanting more. Since its premiere in 1992, Elisabeth has seen an almost unbroken run of productions from Vienna to South Korea, with European and Japanese tours just to name a few.

• There have been a total of at least 25 cast albums as well as eight commercial DVDs of this show on general release through the decades, and just as the operas of Mozart are appreciated in their original settings, so the German-language aspect of Elisabeth lends its own quality of authenticity to this recording. • In the title role that brought her European fame, Dutch born Maya Hakvoort (Elisabeth) has excelled in numerous roles in musicals internationally. An entrepreneur with her own company and highly successful productions, Hakvoort was awarded the Golden Medal of Service of the Republic of Austria in April 2011. In October 2016 she went on to receive the Golden Rathausmann Award of the City of Vienna and in November of the same year was presented with the Grand Medal of Merit for Services to the Province of Lower Austria.

When lockdown was imposed in 2020 many artists began streaming performances from their own homes. In response, pianist Francesco Piemontesi and director Jan Schmidt-Garre launched a concert series to showcase artists living in Berlin, given in the renowned Schinkel Pavillon with an expert technical team assembled at short notice. Arnold BAX (1883–1953) Complete Symphonies And Other Orchestral Works Royal Scottish National Orchestra • David Lloyd-Jones
Key Features: •
This set brings together our Gramophone Award - winning seven-volume edition of Sir Arnold Bax’s complete symphonies, with its substantial additional collection of his other orchestral works which proved itself a distinct improvement on this version and was influential in the general revival of Bax’s music. • On their initial release each of these recordings received wide acclaim, with BBC Music Magazine commenting on Symphony No. 6 : David Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra balance those two crucial sides of this work better than in any other version I’ve heard.’ • The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) is one of Europe’s leading symphony orchestras. The late conductor David Lloyd-Jones has made numerous acclaimed Naxos recordings including works by William Alwyn and Alan Rawsthorne and the seven symphonies of Charles Villiers Stanford.
Sir Arnold Bax wrote his seven symphonies between 1921 and 1939, embracing a prolific period that drew inspiration from a variety of sources. From the dramatic impact of the Second Symphony through to the seascapes of the Fourth and hints of Sibelius in the later works, Bax’s powerful symphonic world is one of surprising and at times stormy vigour contrasting with the most intense lyrical expressiveness and serenity. The selection of additional orchestral works evoking nature and atmospheric landscapes fascinates and rewards in equal measure, providing an essential overview of Bax’s music in critically acclaimed recordings.

Albert William KETÈLBEY (1875–1959) British Light Music, Vol. 14 Bells Across the Meadows • In a Monastery Garden In a Persian Market • Suite Romantique Sylvia Čápová, Piano • Slovak Philharmonic Male Chorus Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra • Adrian Leaper
BUY NOW!
Albert Ketèlbey was an excellent pianist, touring Britain and honing his craft as an expert tunesmith as musical director of London’s Vaudeville Theatre. The delightful miniature In a Monastery Garden placed Ketèlbey at the forefront of British Light Music composers, with its birdsong and atmospheric chants delivering a ‘glow of exultation’ that proved hugely popular in its day. From the unashamedly sentimental Bells Across the Meadows to the impressive Suite Romantique and the famous In a Persian Market , Ketèlbey’s music takes us back to a nostalgic era of palm court salons and imaginative reverie. Key Features: • Albert Ketèlbey’s fame and popularity was ubiquitous during the 1920s and 30s but his work became neglected after the Second World War and he died in relative obscurity. His work has since been reappraised, and in a 2003 poll by the BBC radio programme Your Hundred Best Tunes , Bells Across the Meadows was voted the 36th most popular tune of all time, and the 50th anniversary of Ketèlbey's death was marked with a performance of In a Monastery Garden at the Last Night of the Proms. Some recordings of Ketèlbey’s music have been made but few of these are now easily available. • Conductor Adrian Leaper has an enormous discography of nearly 80 albums across many labels. His recordings for the Naxos and Marco Polo labels include five volumes in the British Light Music edition, and recordings of symphonies by Havergal Brian. • The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra is the oldest symphonic ensemble in Slovakia, and it has given successful concerts throughout Europe and Russia. It has for decades been a key ensemble for the Naxos label, and its recordings both on Naxos and the Marco Polo label remain references for both unusual and core repertoire today.

BUY NOW!
The two leading operatic composers of their time were Rossini and Auber, one now fêted, the other largely overlooked. In 1831 Auber and his long-standing librettist Eugène Scribe produced Le Philtre , which took the concept of petit opéra to the extreme, even outdoing Rossini’s Le Comte Ory in depicting a rural setting peopled not with Arcadian shepherds but with ordinary country folk. Auber’s Franco-Italian style can be heard in the work’s ensembles, while elsewhere the opera shimmers with rich arias, buffo elements and delightful cavatinas. Le Philtre was an unalloyed success receiving 243 performances and inspired Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore . Key Features: • This recording is part of our ongoing series of releases covering productions from the Rossini in Wildbad bel canto opera festival. • Conductor Luciano Acocella has directed other operas for Naxos including Meyerbeer’s Romilda e Costanza on 8.660495-97: ‘The playing of the Passionart Orchestra under Luciano Acocella is lively’ ( Gramophone ). • He has also directed Rossini’s opera Demetrio e Polibio on 8.660405-06. Opera News wrote that ‘Conductor Luciano Acocella keeps a stylish guiding hand on the show’. • Rossini’s Adelaide di Borgogna can also be heard on 8.660401-02: ‘Luciano Acocella gets some lively singing and playing from his Polish chorus and Czech orchestra’ ( Gramophone ).

Camargo GUARNIERI (1907–1993) Piano Music, Vol. 2 Improvisos • Valsas • Momentos Max Barros, Piano
BUY NOW!
Considered the most important Brazilian composer next to Villa-Lobos, Camargo Guarnieri and his impact on the musical life of his country is inestimable, with a body of piano music that represents the composer’s most distinctive stylistic features. Guarnieri was a consummate improviser and many of his piano works reflect a sense of ease and intimacy, giving the impression that they were composed in a flash of instantaneous inspiration. This is particularly true of the ‘character pieces’ in this volume, from the autobiographical Improvisos and Momentos , to the intimate nostalgia of the Valsas . Volume 1 of this edition can be heard on Naxos 8.572626-27. Key Features: • Camargo Guarnieri’s name is gaining considerable traction outside his native Brazil thanks in no small measure to Naxos recordings of his Piano Concertos (8.557666 & 8.557667), his Chôros (8.574197 & 8.574403), and ongoing projects such as the piano music. • Volume 1 of this edition is a two-disc set on Naxos 8.572626-27, also played by Max Barros. This was critically acclaimed by the American Record Guide : ‘Barros is just right for this music: deeply versed in Guarnieri’s idiom, he plays with confident brio and sensitivity and far overshadows other recordings I’ve heard of Guarnieri’s piano pieces. The sound is excellent. Anyone interested in 20th-century Latin American piano music will want this release.’ • Pianist Max Barros is a dedicated champion of Brazilian music, having given premieres and recorded several works by some of Brazil’s foremost composers. His Naxos recordings of Guarnieri’s six piano concertos with conductor Thomas Conlin and the Warsaw Philharmonic won the Discovery Award from Diapason magazine.

Horn Trios BERKELEY • BRAHMS • LESHNOFF David Cooper, Horn • Alexander Kerr, Violin • Orion Weiss, Piano
BUY NOW!
The viability of the horn trio was definitively established by Brahms in 1865. He had learned the natural horn as a child and infused his Trio with a range of moods, including a deeply felt slow movement in honour of his mother who had died earlier in the year and a carefree finale which explores the horn’s hunting legacy. Inspired by this precedent, Lennox Berkeley’s Trio is lively and characterful with a sequence of ingenious and playful variations. GRAMMY-nominated Jonathan Leshnoff is one of America’s leading contemporary composers and his 2016 Trio moves from darkness to light, and is full of pointed syncopations, before arriving at a joyous conclusion. Key Features: • This recording is very timely, as 2023 marks the 190th anniversary of Brahms’ birth, as well as 120th anniversary of Berkeley’s birth and Leshnoff’s 50th birthday. •

Luis Humberto Salgado was an essentially self-taught Ecuadorian composer inspired equally by the folk music of his country and by currents in contemporary modernism. He defined himself as a ‘polytechnic’ composer, absorbing folk motifs and individual dances into an eclectic, vibrant and highly personal idiom. This can be heard in the Viola Sonata where the lively sanjuanito indigenous dance is evoked in music of sophisticated harmonies. The Cello Sonata is more neo-Classical, while Selene commemorates the moon landing of 1969 in striking, unconventional sonorities. Salgado’s Woodwind Quintet combines pentatonic scales and serial techniques to create a ‘polychrome fabric’. Key Features: • 2023 marks the 120th anniversary of the Luis Humberto Salgado’s birth. •
