During his three years of practice, Pat has taken and passed the Illinois and Wisconsin bar examinations, taken over 100 depositions, has tried and won four (yes, FOUR) jury trials, and prevailed on his first appeal to the Illinois Appellate Court. Kate Refine runs our office with diligence, dedication, and a great sense of humor; plus, she is terrific with our clients. If you call our law firm, usually the first one you speak with is Kate. Our clients are lucky to have her on their side. Our colleague Nathan Marchese has assisted us with numerous cases over the years. My name is Joseph Shannon. I am first and foremost a husband and father. My wife, Michelle, and I will celebrate our 27th anniversary this year. During that time, Michelle has run the Shannon household with grace and class while I represented people at the law practice. We have been blessed with six children: Emma, Clare, Kate, Will, Nora, and Johnny. Our lives revolve around our family. My parents, Tom and JoAnne Shannon, had 10 children in Yakima, Washington. (I wrote about my parents in the June newsletter). I am number nine and extremely grateful to my parents and to my siblings, Tom, Mary Jo, Pat, Kathleen, John, Maureen, Anne, and Terry. All of them continue to teach me daily what it is like to be a good person. My parents’ third born, Joseph William, lived only two days, but his spirit still impacts me to this day. I believe that he lives on in each member of our family. I was very fortunate to attend University of Portland and University of Notre Dame Law School. I have practiced law in Illinois for most of my career and have been admitted to practice in a number of other states for cases throughout the years. The professional success I have enjoyed is derived from many factors. I have had tremendous support from my wife, Michelle, in allowing me to venture off the big law firm path and begin a

Are your kids already sweating exams this semester? Fear not! Combine these tips with a regular studying routine, and they’ll be set for anything their teachers assign this year. CHEW ON THIS Not all classrooms allow gum, but those that do offer students a distinct advantage. According to Scientific American, chewing gum increases the flow of oxygen to the areas of your brain responsible for attention and memory. Your student can even coordinate gum flavors with each of their classes. Do they have a biology test coming up? Encourage your student to chew peppermint gum while they study and while they take the test. Their brain will associate the minty flavor with those plant cell organelles they studied for an hour the night before. PROOFREAD WITH GOOGLE Is your child trying to perfect an essay before a midnight deadline? Be sure they leave time to read their essay aloud! Tom Stafford, a psychologist who studies typos at the University of Sheffield, notes that when we reread our work, “we don’t catch every detail; we’re not like computers or NSA databases.” Your student doesn’t catch their typos because they don’t expect them! By reading their work aloud, your student can fix those typos as they come up. But why put in all the effort when they can let Google do it for them? They can simply copy and paste the essay into Google Translate
and let it read the essay aloud. Hearing their work ring out in Google’s monotone speech will help them highlight and fix those mistakes. GET OFF FACEBOOK Is your child wasting all of their precious studying hours on social media? According to Common Sense Media’s 2015 national census survey, tweens and teens spend an average of six to nine hours on some form of media daily. Help your student learn to self-regulate with StayFocusd, a web extension available for free in the Chrome Web Store. By adding this extension to your web browser, you can limit the amount of time your child spends scrolling through Facebook and maximize the time they spend on Google Scholar and Quizlet.

The Shocking History of Asbestos FROM MIRACLE TO CATASTROPHE
From the time of the Industrial Revolution clear through to the middle part of the 20th century, asbestos was regarded as a miracle fiber. The fibrous material was highly regarded for its resistance to heat, flames, chemicals, and weather. Its durability and abundance made it the insulation of choice for most American buildings. Asbestos was also used in a variety of industries, ranging from roofing to manufacturing. Even during this boom, scientists were already beginning to understand the health risk the material carried along with its benefits. As far back as 100 years ago, the U.S. government was concerned with the abnormally high death rate among asbestos workers. Nevertheless, asbestos-containing products continue to be used in the United States. We now know that asbestos causes mesothelioma, a rare and dangerous type of lung cancer with an extremely high mortality rate. Companies that expose citizens to asbestos, whether through callousness or negligence, leave their employees and customers at risk for developing the disease. Even after the risks were well-known and widely publicized, many companies
remained steadfast in their methods, more worried about their bottom line than the health of their workers.

Shannon Law Group P.C. reached a confidential multiple seven-figure settlement for their client James Harrington in a Cook County trucking-unloading case.
On January 28, 2013, Mr. Harrington was working as a delivery truck driver. Jim was asked to make a delivery to a construction site in suburban Chicago. In an effort to help the construction workers unload his delivery, Jim attempted to move a packaging crate to the back of his truck by pulling on the shipping crate. When Jim pulled on the wood crate, one of the boards snapped and Jim’s momentum carried him out the back of his truck. His left leg landed on the concrete below under the full weight of his body. Jim Harrington, a former truck driver from Sterling, Illinois, suffered permanent leg and knee injuries in his fall that will require one or more total knee replacements. In the four and a half years since his fall, Jim has undergone five surgeries, over 100 therapy sessions, and has lived with daily pain and discomfort. Mr. Harrington was represented by Joseph P. Shannon and Patrick D. Cummings of Shannon Law Group, P.C. Regarding the case, Mr. Harrington’s trial attorney Joseph Shannon stated: “We are grateful to the jury system. As we were empaneling a jury to provide Mr. Harrington his day in court, the parties came together to make sure that Mr. Harrington is financially secure for the remainder of his life. I can’t say enough about the great work done by Pat Cummings over the last number of years on this case. We are grateful to Mr. Harrington for entrusting us with this highly sensitive matter. We are also grateful to have the constitutional right to a jury trial for our clients in this country, and grateful to jurors who are ready and willing to decide matters of their peers.”
