JOURNAL T he B est in P atient C are Caleb Meadows on NSI’s Dedication to Our Patients

The stem cell industry offers something that is becoming increasingly rare throughout the health care industry: hope. I’ve worked with NSI Stem Cell for a little over a year. My journey into the field of stem cells began two years ago, after my son passed away. I witnessed a lack of care that resulted in a gut-wrenching situation. From that day forward, I didn’t want to see something similar happen to anyone else. I wanted to be a part of something bigger — to contribute to better patient care and professionalism within the health care industry. I can say I’ve achieved that goal. But the thing about this goal is that it never really ends. It’s a goal that continues because there are always ways to provide better patient care,

and in the stem cell industry — an industry that’s constantly growing — this sentiment is that much truer. Not long after I set that goal for myself, my journey brought me to NSI Stem Cell. Today, I supervise our patient care initiatives. I often talk to our patients before and after therapy. NSI’s dedication to patient care is extraordinary. Every patient matters, regardless of their situation. There is a stark contrast between the kind of care NSI provides and the kind you often find in the health care industry at large, particularly in the U.S. As a patient care supervisor, I get to see the results of our work, and that’s what keeps me inspired. When patients first come to us, it’s often because other methods of care have fallen short. Many of our new patients have decided that surgery or a lifetime of prescription drugs, was not for them.

can go, even before any therapies have taken place.

This makes a huge difference in the lives of patients, and hearing them say thank you, as well as being part of the team that helps them get their lives back, is nothing short of incredible. It’s genuinely exciting to help people overcome challenges in their daily lives. In my position, I hear all kinds of stories. I hear about our patients’ lives, their goals, and their hopes for the future. As they complete their therapy, I get to see them realize that life is about to return to normal — or a lot closer to normal than it had been in months or even years. My drive to provide better patient care remains strong. In the new year, I’m looking forward to NSI’s growth and advancements in stem cell therapy. It gets better every year, and this year will be no different. I’m also looking forward to spending time with my 5-year-old. My fiancée and I adopted a child, and we want nothing more than to provide the best life possible. At the end of the day, that’s what we all deserve.

People come to us not

only because they are

curious about stem cell therapy, but because NSI maintains a high level of patient care. It seems a lot of people in the health care industry forget or don’t realize how far good patient care

“I’m so glad to be telling you about the stem cell procedure. For the longest time, I had a bum shoulder. I had so

many torn rotator cuffs and so many injuries on my shoulder, and I didn’t know what to do. They wouldn’t operate. I couldn’t get the reverse shoulder [replacement] done because I’m too old. “When I found out about the stem cell procedure, I immediately signed up for it. And I’m so glad I did, because now I’m back playing tennis without pain, and I’m loving every second of it! “The procedure was a piece of cake. They sucked a little bit of fat out of me — which I certainly didn’t mind — and they mixed it with my own blood

[as part of a] platelet-rich plasma procedure. They [injected the PRP] in the back of my shoulder, and within 24 hours, it was amazing! The inflammation was reduced! That was the biggest thing, and that was 90 percent of the pain. “I was very happy to be able to play tennis for three hours without pain. Three days after the procedure, I felt amazing. I was ready to go. Ready to go.”

Is There a Difference Between Asthma and COPD? U nderstanding R espiratory D isease

The simple answer is no, but there is more to understanding the difference between asthma and COPD than an answer like that. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an umbrella term for a group of progressive respiratory diseases. The two primary illnesses most often associated with COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Asthma is sometimes mistaken for COPD. While they have similar symptoms, asthma belongs to a different classification of respiratory disease. COPD is a progressive condition that worsens over time. Often, someone with COPD has more than one of the diseases that belong to this category. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it’s believed that approximately 24 million people in the U.S. suffer from COPD, and nearly half of those who have COPD aren’t aware they have it. Part of the reason for this is because the symptoms often begin subtly, before worsening over time. COPD is frequently caused by smoking tobacco, whether actively or in the past. However, approximately 40 percent of patients diagnosed with COPD are people who already have asthma, as well. Asthma can increase your risk of developing COPD, a risk that increases with age.

Symptoms of COPD generally don’t appear until after the age of 40, and often after years of smoking.

The reason why some people develop asthma and others don’t isn’t well understood. There may be a connection between environmental and genetic factors. Exposure to particular types of allergens can be a trigger, but for the most part, triggers differ from person to person. Asthma triggers include:

• Pollen • Dust mites • Mold • Pet hair • Respiratory infection • Physical activity • Cold air

• Smoke • Certain medications • Stress • Food and drink preservatives like sulfites • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Meanwhile, COPD triggers include:

• Pneumonia • Influenza

• Colds • Sinusitis

The differences don’t end there. Next month, we’ll explore the two conditions further, and we’ll look at how stem cell therapy is changing the way respiratory diseases are treated.

How can you tell the difference between asthma and COPD? One factor is age. Asthma usually first occurs during childhood.

Escape to Nicaragua Page 4

E scape to N icaragua

After the hectic holiday season, many of us feel like we need another vacation just to unwind. Luckily, January and February are two of the best months to travel. Flight prices plummet and crowds thin out after the Christmas rush. If you’re looking to escape the dreary winter weather, there’s no better place to visit this season than Nicaragua, the “Central American country that has it all,” as Condé Nast Traveler puts it. Whether you’re looking to explore the rainforests surrounding the Río San Juan or get lost in the quirky-yet-beautiful architecture of Granada, there’s something for everyone in this tropical wonderland. One must-see destination is the Cerro Negro volcano. Just a baby at 150 years old, it’s one of the most active volcanoes in the region. It only takes about an hour to scale its smoking, black gravel surface, and the verdant forests surrounding the peak are a sight to behold. Adventurous travelers can board down the side, reaching ludicrous speeds as they teeter and try not to fall. In fact, it’s almost impossible to travel anywhere in the country without seeing an “I boarded a volcano” T-shirt.

If relaxing on a pearlescent beach is more your speed, take a short boat trip out to the Corn Islands. There, you can amble around the small towns bordering the shockingly blue Pacific, visit a number of laid-back seafood restaurants, get scuba certified for a fraction of the price anywhere else in the world, or just read your book as you swing in a hammock by the waves. You can also visit the gorgeous, alabaster Our Lady of Grace Cathedral in “new” Léon. The biggest church in all of Central America, this unique Baroque and neoclassicist structure was built in 1814. Visitors can climb onto its roof (as long as they don’t wear shoes) and bask in the view of surrounding volcanoes (including Cerro Negro). If you’re planning on heading to Nicaragua, it’s best to do it soon. Neighbor Costa Rica often overflows with tourists, and instead of wading through the crowds there, many travelers are catching on to what Nicaragua has to offer.
