Celebrating 10 years at the

Heart of the Rail Supply Chain

We are delighted to welcome you to our Member Trade Directory which perfectly illustrates the breadth and depth of our membership and the organisations that have joined the Rail Alliance. In 2007, the Rail Alliance was launched by Colin Flack (Chairman of the Rail Alliance) a small organisation at the time, set up to support the rail industry chain with a motto that still rings very true today – Network, Collaborate, Innovate, Thrive.

We are very proud of the fact that the Rail Alliance was born in the same region that brought the world the Industrial Revolution and from that the Railway. We are at heart an organisation that is very conscious of the fact that we came into existence through the drive and energy of the SME base, the backbone of the UK economy. We remain very focused on the need to support companies large and small from every sector in their endeavours to trade in and enrich the rail sector. Uniquely our membership spans all aspects of the rail supply chain and we have no barriers to entry. Over the last 10 years we have grown from an off shoot of the Manufacturing Advisory Service within theWest Midlands to become the premier B2B networking organisation in the rail sector, with members drawn from all corners of the country and indeed the globe. Our instinct is to collaborate not compete and thus we have strategic relationships with the like of the Engineering Employers Federation, the British Chambers of Commerce, Rail Research UK and the European Rail Clusters Initiative as well as more recently with Lloyds Banking Group. In all our active network has grown from its humble origins to over 50,000 companies in the UK alone. We are founder members of the Rail Supply Group, the rail sector council. With the Rail Alliance regarded as an authority in matters relating to challenges faced by the UK rail supply chain and the challenges faced by SME’s supplying into the Rail Sector the business is going from strength-to- strength, with more and more companies using Rail Alliance as a strategic tool to improve business effectiveness and competitive advantage. We are proud to say that we have become the go-to team when it comes to doing business in the rail sector.

Welding certificates like BS EN 15085 are vital as UK offers high quality exports to international markets

Despite fear surrounding Brexit, there remains a growing global appetite for UK Rail exports. Developing economies increasingly favour UK-made products for their reliability and quality. Expert knowledge, specialist skills and impressive facilities are the UK’s unique selling points as Britain seeks to compete through quality. As the UK supply chain prepares to seize this opportunity, fabricators must ensure that they can comply with ever increasing quality requirements. Manufacturers of quality components now employ internationally qualified welding engineers, materials engineers and other specialists to ensure world-leading standards are adhered to at all times. InternationalWelding Engineer Kieran Brennan advises that leading fabrication companies will guarantee quality through certification:“Industry specific accreditation such as BS EN 15085 is proof that a fabricator can meet increasingly stringent standards.” he said. BS EN 15085 is the recognised standard for welding of railway vehicles and components and is now considered a prerequisite for approved supplier status amongst many tier one companies. Furthermore, the UK’s continual innovation focus makes accreditations increasingly powerful.“Accreditation also demonstrates expert knowledge, which enables companies to add further value through innovation and quality”, says Kieran,“Welding procedures have a profound effect on quality and cost, so it’s no wonder that accreditation to BS EN 15085 provides customers with genuine assurance.”

TEST &TRIALVOUCHER SCHEME (TVS)

Benefits • Enable the practical development, trialling and demonstration of innovative or new solutions for the rail market. • Open to qualifying businesses and Academic/Research bodies. Process All that is required is a brief outline of the proposal and then a member of the team will contact you to discuss the details and to make a firm booking.Applicants will be encouraged to either attend one of the monthly QRTC briefing days or if that is not possible, to arrange a visit to the QRTC site to better understand the requirements of the proposed testing/trialling. There are no formal restrictions in terms of technology readiness levels (TRL) although this scheme is targeted at the latter stages of the route to market, eg TRL 4-7.

The Rail Safety and Standards Board’s (RSSB) Test Voucher Scheme (TVS) gives up to (typically) three days subsidised access to test and trials facilities within the UK to assist UK-based companies in developing their products, goods and services for the rail sector.Typically, this assistance is offered to companies transiting through the Technology Readiness Levels 4-7 space – the facilities used may be primary, secondary or tertiary facilities at a number of locations around the UK. Depending on individual requirements this may include test loop and infrastructure, traction, rolling stock and trials staff time. Ordinarily, the maximum value gained per company/consortium through the scheme from the 3 days’ testing or trialling is £3000 per company per product. Although the site at QRTC has been used for 250+ company test days since 2013 the Rail Alliance keeps record of other primary, secondary and tertiary testing facilities to ensure that the best possible match is made between test requirement and test location. Although in the process of being updated, the list of rail testing and trialling sites can be added to should you be able to offer such a facility within the UK – once complete this database of test and trial facilities will be hosted on this web page and will be continuously updated as a matter of course.Where companies require to carry out testing and trialling in the TRL 8-9 space there would be an expectation on behalf of RSSB that funding would be in place from the eventual customer to enable this testing to take place.

WE MOVE CITIES

Once a trials plan has been agreed, a risk assessment and a safe system of work submitted, the activity can take place and on conclusion applicants will be required to conduct a post event review with a member of the Rail Alliance staff. This will form the basis of the case study which will be shared with RSSB – however, IPR remain at all times the property

of the applicant who will be responsible for ensuring that’s its own needs for confidentiality are met through a mutually acceptable documentation process as required. Applications should be made direct to railtest@railalliance. co.uk with ‘RSSB RTVS’ in the subject line – or contact Robert Hopkin on 01789 720026.

A transforming world needs transformational solutions. As new trends in population distribution and travel patterns emerge, consumer expectations and values are shifting radically. World mobility is changing, and at Coventry University we’re meeting the demands of this new global transit landscape through the Centre for Mobility and Transport together with the new national transport design centre (ntdc) – which are set up to support the rail, automotive, marine and aerospace industries. Building on our existing expertise in transport design and mobility, the centres are able to offer collaborative funded research, direct consultancy against specific briefs,

knowledge transfer opportunities to boost productivity and innovation and placements which provide access to our pool of world-class design students and graduates. Whether you want insight into the behaviour of rail commuters, new solutions for retrofitting existing rail interiors or new concepts in safety engineering and lightweighting (including cybersecurity), our culture of exploration and open-ended discovery should make us your first port of call.
