I once performed a wedding for a young couple. The wedding was held on a river barge which had been converted into a floating restaurant on the Missouri River. It was a beautiful setting. Looking outside the windows we could see the massive Missouri River flowing past the restaurant windows. As I tried to emphasize how short and how precious life is, and for them not to forget it, I had them look at the river. I said, “Pretend this is a river of time, sort of like eternity flowing past us. Now, imagine picking up a tiny grain of sand and throwing it into the river.” I told them that their whole life on earth was like that little grain of sand, that all eternity was before them, and that what truly mattered in life was knowing and loving God. d
