As the poster campaign coincides with the start of the lighting season, AEW Administrator, Ken Legros, is confident that it will generate significant increases in the amount of WEEE recycled through electrical wholesalers over the next five or six months. “The AEW and its 100+ members have worked closely with WEEE Ireland and Irish Lamps Recycling over the last few years to improve the WEEE recycling performance in the industry and this new campaign is aimed at taking it to the next level”, says Ken. “Some electrical wholesalers have been doing a sterling job when it comes to recycling, while others are now starting to follow

suit, so I would encourage all AEW members to visit the WEEE Ireland website www.weeeireland. ie to learn more about recycling best practice”. On a more general note, AEW membership has been reinvigorated this year with the addition of CEF and also a number of independent wholesalers, with the result that the AEW now represents over 90% of electrical wholesalers in the Republic of Ireland. New members are always welcome, however, and membership for 2021 is now open. To apply, email Ken Legros at admin@iebg.ie or call him on 085 2072761. The AEW is affiliated to the Electrical Industries Federation of Ireland (EIFI) and represents the views of electrical wholesalers

in that forum. The AEW is currently working on two ‘hot topics’, firstly, the New Wiring Rules and secondly, a staff training programme. To find out more, AEW members are encouraged to attend the next AEW meeting, which will be held in the Clayton Hotel, Liffey Valley at 3.00 pm on Wednesday 11th November 2020. LEDEVO Single with hidden PIR detector

LEDX: Wide beam A modern take on traditional bulkheads

LEDX: Wide beam and rust-resistant

AS THE LED SEASON LIGHTS UP, ANDY DOUGLAS, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT TIMEGUARD SAYS THEY’RE PERFECTLY PREPARED FOR THE WINTER RUSH... Staying safe

I n the busiest season for core product lines that installers rely on, like outdoor LED lighting, this is no time to be letting your customers down. We are all finding ways of accommodating different ways of working together, and, during so much change, you’ll probably agree that now is not the time for anyone to be taking business risks with unknown, untested suppliers. Demand for the type of products we design at Timeguard will not disappear, and I think it would be fair to say that a good percentage of any ‘lost’ business since March is business delayed. It follows that you need to be ready to meet the pent-up demand, and the safe option is the one you know and can trust. No doubt we will all be approaching financial commitments with heightened caution this season but, as a collaborative channel, we will manage our way through this period of change together. For our part as manufacturers, we’ve already invested into having all the stock you’ll need, ready for you.

There’s no need to teach grandmothers to suck eggs. We all understand the core needs in this market: something that looks good to the end-user, something that provides opportunities to add value and profitability, and something that does a good job for years and years. Undoubtedly, installers will come up against price- sensitive jobs and customers, but there should be no need for them to compromise on the system components. Quite the reverse: good quality pays its way. Where there is a price differential between bucket shop and branded quality, the difference is more than justified by design and specification, by the inherent value of the guarantee and by installation efficiency. A product that does what it promises, that is designed for easy fitting and won’t confuse the end-user with unintelligible settings, is going to be a cheaper install. Professional installers get that. Timeguard delivers it. Having argued the case for the brand, let’s look at the Timeguard ranges. We know what the top sellers by volume will be and

we understand the special requirements installers have for different jobs. So, we’ve got them all covered. Flexibility One of the ‘Top’ products since its launch, is the LED PRO range, a range that does tick all the boxes for professional installers and it’s a great proposition for wholesale stockists as they can rationalise total stock while still offering a full range of options for you off the shelf. For those of you still unfamiliar with the concept, LED PRO is a range of floodlights with interchangeable controls. Installers choose the most suitable floodlight power for the job at hand - ie 10W to 100W per flood - decide how they want it switched - PIR, photocell, RF remote, or as a slave - and combine the two on site Lights that really do flood It might sound simple, but the right sort of illumination can’t be taken for granted.

“As manufacturers, we’ve already invested into having all the stock you’ll need, ready for you.”

SEETHINGS INADIFFERENT LIGHT

When it’s right, it’s the signature of good quality design. Uncontrolled LED’s emit a straight beam so, if the floodlight isn’t designed to control and distribute the light evenly, the floodlight will have a spotlight-like effect when what people want is a wide even spread of light. A quick check is to keep a lookout for lenses over the diodes, as that’s a sure tip that the designer has considered light beams and angles. Where you have a big area to illuminate, choose LED floodlights with arrays designed specifically to provide the ‘really wide’ beam you may need. It is an option we now offer across our ranges, including the LED-X rust-resistant models. Rust-free good looks Rust-resistance is crucial for keeping good looks and avoiding the telltale sign of unsightly running marks often seen down the wall. Even though most LED floodlights are now made primarily of polycarbonate, the brackets are normally always mild steel that will corrode and rust. That’s why we designed the rust- resistant range, ideal for coastal areas or installation in damper places with every single metallic component, including the bracket manufactured from rust-resistant 316 stainless steel – even down to the

screws on the PCB board. When we designed the rust-resistant floodlight range, we also took the opportunity to devise an optional pan and tilt bracket that allows for the floodlight to be panned sideways (left and right) and then vertically by the floodlight fitting itself for precise and accurate area illumination. The not-so-basic bulkheads Demand for good old bulkheads that sit flush to the wall never falters, but there’s no reason for them to be left behind in the quality and design stakes. We continue to improve on them and, while we still offer retro, die-cast models, our LED88 polycarbonate versions with and without PIR’s seem to be a market favourite. Easy to install, easy to use and easy on the eye. Small is beautiful When we first introduced the revolutionary design of the ultra-compact Nighteye range, with both single-headed and twin-headed versions, it was widely seen that the single units are hardly bigger than a man’s hand – wow! “Could they do the job”, you ask? Well, they certainly could and they’ve proved that they also last the course and give years and years of service. The next step was

an evolution, incorporating the PIR detector within the main housing in the EVO range so that the detectors are ‘hidden’ but still offer easy to set time and lux control settings. With single and twin floodlight options in black or white, they look great and they do a great job. We rest our case. You might want to keep a small stock of lower-volume lines like extra high- power floods, die-cast bulkheads, step lights etc. in the van. Alternatively, all can be supplied from stock and it can be shipped to your wholesaler quickly from our London warehouse. Find out more at www.timeguard.com – or give us a call: +44 (0) 20 8450 8944 to discuss the ranges available and which ones best suit your needs.

LISBURN’S NEWEST HOTEL OPENING COMPLETES ANOTHER PREMIER PROJECT FOR SWITCHED-ON AG ELECTRICAL… AGELECTRICALCOMPLETE £4MLUXURYHOTEL

D escribed as a “casual and relaxed no fuss hotel”, the Haslem Hotel, Lisburn, County Antrim features 45 bedrooms, an 80-seater open-plan lobby and bar area, 68-seater restaurant, residents’ gym, and conference room. Targeted at business travellers from across the UK and Ireland, it represents a £4 million investment by the Northern

Argos store and its adjoining first-floor space. The hotel, which is aiming for four-star status, boasts three bedroom sizes all with super-fast broadband, 55-inch TV and bespoke lighting throughout, Beannchor says the development “epitomises urban style” which features a conference room, residents’ gym and an underground car park as well as a lobby bar and restaurant. The bespoke interior fit-out and refurbishment contractor, Konstruct Interiors, looked to AG Electrical to carry out the full electrical package. This included General & Emergency

Ireland’s largest hospitality group, Beannchor, whose hotel portfolio

includes the five-star Merchant Hotel and the four-star Bullitt Hotel both in Belfast. The Haslem Hotel occupies around 30,000 sq ft of the Lisburn Square scheme, built on the site of the former

Lighting, Fire & Security Systems, Audio Visual Installation, Structured Cabling and every other electrical requirement that the project demanded. Well known for their work in the hospitality industry, AG Electrical has worked on numerous projects previously with Konstruct Interiors. ‘We work well as a team with Konstruct Interiors,” says Adam Gilmore, Managing Director at AG Electrical. “They’re very professional and efficient to work with. As a client, this is another successful project that we’ve completed with them. What sets AG Electrical apart from our competition is the lengths we go to in order to listen and understand our client’s needs. When the client, architect or designer shares their design vision of where they want to go with the project we dive into the nuts and bolts of it to get a lighting design feel. For example, if the project is following an art deco theme we’ll come up with various ideas that give a bespoke spec to the lighting,

specifically designed to complement the overall design.” For the Haslem Hotel, AG Electrical designed an impressive architectural lighting installation with the majority of products procured from local lighting supplier, Lightsource. Standout pieces were tailor-made and shipped in from Italy. “We used a Lutron dimming system throughout the property to help create the right lighting ambience for the different hotel areas,” says Adam. “The hotel interior style is young and fresh, and the lighting reflects that. “Absolute Technologies provided the AV system for us throughout the ground floor bar, restaurant, reception and toilet areas. They delivered top-class sound quality while adhering to restrictions on noise levels in the various parts of the hotel.” Adam described the project as extremely satisfying - the only difficulty faced was the delay due to the Covid-19 lockdown. However, AG Electrical has now moved on to the next development phase at

Lisburn Square. “We’ve just started refurbishment works at the serviced apartments which are attached to the hotel.” With their personal touch and proactive management, AG Electrical ensures that projects are always well-organised, well run, of great quality and are consistently

delivered on time and on budget. “We’re extremely competent and

professional in what we do, which gives our clients confidence in our ability to deliver great work on time. That’s why we attract so much repeat business from top-class clients,” Adam says.

P oor indoor air quality can seriously affect our health and wellbeing. Whether it is inside homes, hospitals, schools or offices, effective ventilation guarantees that excess moisture and airborne pollutants are removed leaving a clean and fresh air environment. VENTILATION SYSTEMS

LUCY HOLLAND, AT SUPPLY PARTNER AIRFLOW DEVELOPMENTS, EXPLAINS WHAT FEATURES YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR WHEN SELECTING AN EXTRACTOR FAN… Which type of extractor fan should I install? T he Building Regulations Approved Document F - Ventilation, sets minimum flow rates that an extractor fan installed in a wet room should be able to deliver when correctly installed. The minimum airflow rates are as follows: • 6 l/sec for toilets • 15 l/sec for bathrooms • 30 l/sec for utility rooms • 60 l/sec for kitchens. (30 l/sec in kitchens when the fan is installed adjacent to the hob – this is also the minimum flow rate expected from a ducted cooker hood) Having considered the application of the ventilation required it is important to select the correct type of fan to meet the requirement fully. Axial Fans are ideal for through the wall, ceiling and short run of ducting applications. While providing high performance from a slim profile they work against limited back pressure so are recommended for use with flexible ducting not exceeding 1.5m in length with a maximum of two 90 degree bends. Mixed Flow Fans for wall and ceiling combine the convenience of an axial fan size with the performance of a small centrifugal fan making them ideal for short to medium duct runs. Centrifugal Fans are quiet, powerful and suitable for wall and ceiling applications. They work well against system resistance making them the perfect choice for efficient performance for longer duct runs. Safety Low Voltage Fans (SELV) Axial, Mixed Flow and Centrifugal Fan variants operating from 12v or 24volt supply which may be installed in accordance with IEE wiring regulations.
