Singing Lies By E dith G oreham C larke

A voice seemed to whisper to Edith, "You cannot sing those words truthfully.” Knowing in her heart that it would be a lie if she did, she did not rise to her feet with the rest of the congregation. Glancing tim idly toward her friend, she saw that Mabel had not risen, either. "Why are you not singing?” she murmured softly. "I dare not sing lies to God any more,” Mabel answered, and, bowing their heads, the two girls prayed earnestly that they might be saved. When the meeting came to an end, those who had npt been able to sing “Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away,” were asked to remain behind for an after meeting. Edith and Mabel stayed in their

"Mother, I hear therp are to be evan gelistic meetings at St. Giles’ Church. May I go?" "Why, yes, my dear; of course you may go,” answered Mabel’s invalid mother. "Mrs. Carson is coming in to see me, so I will not be alone. What time is the meeting?" “At eight o’clock, Mother. I have never gone to real evangelistic meetings before, and I think it will be quite exciting. I’ll stop for Edith on the way, and see whether she will go with me.” Mabel hurried away to prepare the eve ning meal, singing gaily as she did so. After dinner, Mabel put on her hat and started out to see whether her friend, Edith, would go with her to the meeting at St. Giles’ Church. Edith was quite willing, and before long the two girls were seated near the back of the large, dark building. The meeting began with an opening hymn, and then followed a prayer such as the girls had never heard before. It was very simple, and yet very earnest—-"just as if the min ister could actually see the One to whom he was praying," as Edith expressed it after wards. After the prayer another hymn was announced, “Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away,” sang the congregation heartily. When the hymn came to an end, the speaker rose to his feet. "My dear friends,” he began quietly, “I wonder how many of you have meant the words you have been singing, from your hearts? Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away.’ Is it true of you? Are your sins washed away in the precious blood shed for you on Calvary?NWhen the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross, ’He died that we might be forgiven, He died to make us good, That we might go at last to heaven, Saved by His precious blood.’ God has told us plainly in His Word that ‘without shedding of blood [there] is no remission’ (Heb. 9 :22 )—no sending away of sins. But God tells us also that ‘the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin' (1 John 1:7). "Have you come to the Son of God to have your sin washed away? If you have not, then what you sang a few moments ago was a lie. It cannot be right to sing what is not true! Do not tell lies to Almighty God and thus defy Him in the act of wor shiping Him. Those who know their sins are washed away will please rise, and let us sing these glorious words again together; but if any of you know that no such thing has happened to you, bow your heads in prayer while we are singing, and we can pray for you to obtain the same blessing as we have. Remember that it is no merit or credit to us that our sins have been washed away—it is all of grace, God’s free gift to us. God has said: ‘When I see the blood’— the precious blood of the Lamb of God, slain for sinners— I will pass over you' ” „(Ex. 12:13).

Discussion: (Discuss the word “walk” as it pertains to a Christian's conduct.) How many times we have seen footprints on dusty country roads and often have been able to tell who has passed that way before us, by looking at the footprints! Similarly, as Christian boys and girls, we leave marks or footprints as we walk before others in the Christian life. How careful we should be that’ those who come in contact with us may know by our conduct whether or not we are Christians! Question: How should a Christian walk? Answer: “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abound ing therein with thanksgiving” (Col. 2:6, 7). “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor” (*Eph. 5:1, 2). *For a complete list o f Scriptures [or memory work in the Christian Li[e Series, see previous copies o f T he K ing ' s B usiness . seats, and quite a number of other boys and girls and young people, encouraged by their example, also stayed. The speaker came down from the chancel, and standing among those who remained, explained the gospel once more very, very simply. Then he asked those who wished to accept the Lord Jesus as their Saviour that very night to put up their hands. Every hand went up immediately, and then all knelt to pray. From their hearts, the little company re peated after the leader these words: “Just as I am, young, strong, and free, To be the best that I can be, For truth, and righteousness, and Thee, O Lamb of God, I come.” Then the speaker read from the Word of God: “ ‘Accepted in the beloved: In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace’ ’’ (Eph. 1:6, 7 ). “Will not those of you who have truly come to Him tonight, thank Him audibly?” continued the speaker. "W e are told: If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved’ ” (Rom. 10:9). One after another short prayers went up, as each one sealed his conversion by thank ing the Lord Jesus for washing away all sin in His precious blood. It was a very happy little band of young people who rose to their feet at the end of a quarter of an hour, to join together in singing: "Hallelujah, 'tis done! I believe on the Son; I am saved through the blood of the cru cified One."
