the heart, and we cannot see any of the black; but let us be careful, for every time the heart is shaken or tilted the black again shows. There never will be a time in this life when we will be entirely free from sin; but we can come as near to it as is humanly possible, when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. When Solomon prayed for an under standing heart, God gave him the Holy Spirit, in order that he might discern be tween good and evil.

who came from heaven to abide in the hearts of saved people. The top of the heart is black, and the rest blue. When a person accepts Christ, the Holy Spirit enters the heart, but He is not always allowed to fill the heart. The more of this blue I put in, the less of the black is allowed to stay in the heart. The more room in the heart that is occupied by the Holy Spirit, the less there is for sin. I have put enough blue in to entirely fill 1 Kings 11:26 And Jeroboam the son of Ne- bat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon’s servant, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king. 27 And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father. 28 And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph. 29 And it came to pass at that time when Jero boam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way: and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field: 30 And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces: 31 And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee: 37 And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel. 38 And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is right in my sight, to keep my stat utes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee. 39 And I will for this afflict the seed, of David, but not for ever. '40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto Shishak king of Egypt, atra was in Egypt until the death of Solomon. Lesson Text: I Ki. 11:26-31,37-40. Golden Text: "In all thy ways acknowl edge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Prov. 3:6 ). Devotional Reading: Prov. 4:1-9. J EROBOAM was “a mighty man of valor,” still young in years, industrious, and well fitted for a place of high responsibility. He was a servant of Solo mon. The king, noting the efficiency with which his work was performed, together with his natural fitness and dependability, promoted him to be the leader of the house of Joseph. But when Solomon discovered the Lord’s plan in relation to Jeroboam, he at once began the attempt to thwart that purpose, and thus gave cause for Jeroboam to be come the enemy of Solomon. It was be cause of Solomon’s failure that the Lord wrested part of his kingdom from him, and gave it into the hands of Jeroboam. In this manner, enmity arose between the two men, because something was wrong with Solo mon in the sight of God. When a man turns his back upon the Lord, then enemies appear, but “when a man’s ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him” (Prov. 16:7). Outline and Exposition I. JULY 9, 1939 JEROBOAM: A MAN WITH A GREAT OPPORTUNITY K ings 11:26-43

II. T h e P ro ph ec y (29, 30)

As Jeroboam was departing from Jerusa lem, the prophet Ahijah met him. The prophet was clothed in a new garment which he tore into twelve pieces, ten of which he gave to Jeroboam, saying, “Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee” To such a man as Jeroboam, who was naturally ambitious and skillful, capable and resourceful, this prophecy must have come with appealing force. It would tend to overcome whatever feeling of loyalty he might have had toward the king, and would cause him to consider that his right ful place was actually being usurped by Solomon..
