Points and Problems i; "For he was {led from the presence o{ king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt" (1 Ki. 12:2). Thus history repeats itself. Once the great ancestor of Jeroboam found himself down in Egypt as the result of the enmity of his brethren. And the rea son was practically the same in each case. The exaltation of Joseph above his breth ren aroused .their hatred, and the exaltation of Jeroboam aroused the enmity of Solomon. Furthermore, just as it was at the sugges tion of Judah that Joseph was sold into Egypt, even so it was Solomon a member of the tribe of Judah who drove Jeroboam into Egypt. 2. "Make . . , his heavy yoke . . . light - er, and we will serve thee" (v. 4 ). The people of a nation will endure a great deal of oppression for the sake of living under a strong government where there is the se curity of law and order. But there is a point beyond which men will refuse to sub mit. When the price of government, paid in the form of taxes and the increasing re duction of individual liberty, becomes too great, there comes rebellion. That govern ment is best which confers upon its citizens the most for the price it demands. But we have found human government, at its very best, is enormously wasteful and expensive in comparison to the benefits it bestows. When God’s King comes down to earth again, it will be different with His blessed kingdom. The “yoke” of His kingdom will be "easy,” and its “burden” will be "light." 3. "The king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old m ens coun~ sel" (v. 13). Rehoboam made two very serious mistakes. In the first place, he re jected the counsel of the old men and took the reckless advice of the young men. This does not mean that the young men are al ways wrong and the old men are always right, but it does mean that the experience and wisdom of age have their value. In the second place, the young king made the mis take of conveying his reply to the people in an arrogant manner, "roughly." Arro gance never succeeds. There is a beautiful picture of God’s coming King in Psalm 45, of whom it is said that "grace is poured into thy lips” (v„ 2 ). He rides “prosper ously, because of truth and meekness and ■ righteousness" (v. 4 ) . Truth and righteous ness are important in our dealings with men, but “meekness” is also important. Our plans may be perfectly correct and fail utterly just because we have forgotten to be gracious in seeking to persuade men. When Napoleon marched after the re treating Russians as they led him as far as Moscow, he brought with him a marble statue of himself crowned with laurel, which he intended to erect in the most con spicuous place within the city to proclaim himself the world’s conqueror. Providence, however, decreed that the piece of marble folly should become the property of Russia by military conquest, for Napoleon retreat ed through the deep snows, leaving one hundred seventy-five- thousand brave sol diers scattered along the route. Today, in the Kremlin Museum, the traveler is shown Golden Text Illustration P roverbs 29:23

hoboam to be their leader. His father had made them work very hard. Would Reho boam be any easier with them? They won dered. This was the time that they asked Jeroboam their leader to go to ask the new king whether he would treat them more kindly than his father had, and if so, they would serve him. Rehoboam wasn’t willing to answer them at once. He asked for three days to think it over. Then he called in the old men who
