description of an ideal condition for any na tion— p eace and prosperity. And the two things go together. W ar may bring a soap-bubble kind of prosperity for a few days, but we have found that the end is worse than the beginning. W e are still paying for the so-called “prosperity” of the years of the World War, and we shall keep on paying for a long time. Until the problem of war is solved, there can be no solution of the world's economic problems. Not merely the dictatorial governments, but also the peace-loving democracies, have frankly thrown themselves into the maddest race for military supremacy that the world has ever known. And this sowing of the seeds of war will inevitably be followed by a harvest of further economic disaster, which in turn will arouse unrest and dis content and thus set the stage for another war. This vicious circle will be completely broken only by the return of our Lord as King of Kings to establish His kingdom on earth. And His first step in the solution of the world’s economic problems will be to put an end to human warfare (Isa. 2:1-4).

Taking advantage of the kingdom’s free dom from war, Asa began to strengthen his boundaries by building and guarding the cities of the nation. He did not close his eyes to the fact that there would be no lasting peace as long as outside nations were ready to destroy him and possess the land. He manifested his humility in giving credit to the Lord for the absence of war, declaring that it was because the Lord’s people had sought Him that peace reigned in the kingdom. III. His P rayer (9-12) The cause of Asa’s prayer was the inva sion of Zerah and his host- Asa’s army was greatly outnumbered by an active and well-trained foe. The fact that Asa had begun his reign by honoring the Lord, and that he himself was right with Him, consti tuted no guarantee that he would be secure from attack from his enemies. But, in this case, the attack was no cause for alarm, but was a cause for prayer. It is usually when we come to the end of our own re sources and realize the enemy’s great power that we turn to God. His deliverance is ob tained through prayer. The character of Asa’s prayer demands special notice. This prayer was offered after Asa had done all that he could in the way of preparedness. Asa knew that the outcome of the battle did not depend upon the numbers or the ability of either one of the opposing armies. It depended solely upon which side was God’s side—and it was nothing to God whether that company had many or few. Asa’s petition was definite: “Help us, O Lord our God.” He used no fulsome words, but put the matter directly before the One whose aid was being sought. The arguments Asa used should also be noted. He admitted that the glory of vic tory would be the Lord’s. He said: “We rest [or rely] upon thee”—not upon human ability. Furthermore, he declared his de pendence upon the Lord: “In thy name we go against this multitude”—not in his own name, nor even in the name of Judah. He W eis aware that God’s power would be tested, for he said, "Let not man prevail against thee,” implying that victory for Judah would be victory for the Lord, Judah being merely the means used by the Lord. Finally, he gave proof of the sincerity of his prayer by saying, “W e go,” suggesting that it is useless for one to pray unless he is ready to be used in the answer. The re sult was that which might be expected: “The Lord smote the Ethiopians” on Ju dah’s behalf, and gave victory to Asa and his people. Points and Problems 1. Note several changes which occur in the American Revision: Instead of “altars of the strange gods” read " the foreign al tars" (2 Chron. 14:3). Instead of “images” read “ sun-images " (v. 5 ). Instead of "fenced cities” read "fortified cities” (v. 6 ). Instead of “targets and spears” read "buck lers and spears” (v. 8). 2. "He had no war in those years . . . S o they built and prospered” (vs. 6, 7). In these two brief statements we have a
