The Intern and Student Worker job codes should be used to designate positions filled by bona fide students who are gaining hands-on experience related to their field of study. The distinction between the two intern job codes mirrors the distinction between the existing Student Employee and Student Worker job codes. Agencies also continue to use other unclassified job codes for Student Employees and Student Workers for reporting purposes, as explained in General Circular 2017-044. The difference between these jobs and the new Intern will be the nature of work assigned, as designated by the EEO Code for the job. Other elements such as benefits, leave accrual, etc. for interns will remain the same as the other bona fide students. See a comparison of these four unclassified jobs.
