Celebrating 75 Years of Optimism in Byron The Optimist Club of Byron was officially established on April 11, 1950, when 42 dedicated, community-minded men gathered at the Hermitage Club to discuss how best to support youth in the village of Byron. At the time, membership was limited to men, but in 1953, several of the members’ wives founded the Opti- Mrs. Club—an auxiliary group that raised funds and supported numerous youth programs within the community. NLDC performs 2024 Winterlude The students of North London Dance Centre (NLDC) performed across four shows at the Wolf Performance Hall on Sunday, December 15th. “What an amazing whirlwind it was!” exclaimed Kelly Hajar, Owner/Director. “Hundreds of our talented dancers took the stage to share their love of dance with over a thousand family members and friends – it doesn’t get more magical (or more festive!) than that! From the tiniest toes in Dance Development, to the jaw-dropping talent of our advanced dancers, every performer brought their passion and dedication to life on stage,” said Kelly. The first initiative by the Optimist Club of Byron was the sponsorship of a girls’ fastball team. Over the years, the Club has continuously expanded its efforts, supporting a wide range of youth-focused activities and community programs. In 1989, the Club officially opened its membership to both men and women, strengthening its inclusive mission. One of the Club’s earliest major projects was the construction of the Optimist Youth Centre on Norman Avenue, which included tennis courts, playing fields, and a swimming pool. Opened in 1957, it quickly became a hub for community events and teen dances. After Byron’s annexation by the City of London in 1961, the centre and surrounding parkland were gifted to the city. The parkland was later named “Jorgenson Park” in honour of Gord Jorgenson, a long-standing Optimist and City Councillor. Another lasting legacy is the Byron Optimist Sports Complex on Boler Road. Developed on land donated by local developer Bill Willcock and Dr. Hugh Allen, the project was initiated by a planning committee that met regularly from 1976 to 1978. A separate charitable organization, Byron Optimist Sports Complex Inc., was created to hold the land and issue tax receipts. With support from door-to-door fundraising and a Wintario grant, the Complex officially opened on June 2nd, 1979. Now in their 27th season, North London Dance Centre offers more than 80 classes per week for children and adults at our 1055 Sarnia Road location. Learn more at northlondondancecentre.ca

Further enhancements, including field lighting and buildings, were made possible in part by a “Dream Home Draw” in 1991. The Sports Complex today features three soccer fields and three baseball diamonds, maintained entirely by the Club and without any government funding. It also hosts “Challenge

Baseball,” a weekly summer program for children with physical and developmental challenges. Every July 1st, the Complex becomes the site of Byron’s Canada Day celebrations, complete with fireworks and family entertainment—an event that draws thousands and is run entirely by Club volunteers. Beyond sports and recreation, the Club supports several other youth and family initiatives. These include youth dances, the annual “Safety on Wheels” Bicycle Rodeo, an Easter Egg Hunt at Boler Mountain, and “Breakfast with Santa.” The Club also proudly sponsors students attending the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar and fundraises for Vanier Children’s Services through its annual “Shopping for HOPE” event. Additional efforts include book sales, silent auctions, and support for school breakfast programs, student scholarships, literacy initiatives, and organizations such as Special Olympics and Track 3 Ski School. The Optimist Club of Byron has proudly served the community for 75 years and its continued success depends on passionate volunteers. We welcome all who wish to make a difference in the lives of youth and their communities. Get involved!
