A Neighbourhood with History
Finnieston has a rich and fascinating past that reflects the story of Glasgow itself. Originally developed in the late 18th century, the area was named after the Reverend John Finnie, a prominent local minister. What began as a residential quarter soon became a hub of industry as Glasgow grew into one of the world’s great port cities. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Finnieston played a central role in Glasgow’s reputation as the “Second City of the Empire.” Its shipyards, warehouses, and engineering works supported the booming Clyde industries, while generations of workers and families built a proud and close-knit community.
