Fanciful at the moment, maybe, but with AI development at exponential rates, we need to embrace what could be, rather than what will no longer be. Breaking Down the Silos As recently as a decade ago, payroll existed almost entirely in isolation from other business functions. The transformation I’ve witnessed has been remarkable, with modern payroll now connecting deeply with HR, finance, workforce management systems, and more. For businesses with operations worldwide, these connections grow exponentially more complex. This complexity creates the opportunity for those of us in managed services who can position ourselves as integration specialists, creating seamless information flows that connect their entire operation. The ability to coordinate these complex ecosystems represents significant value that goes far beyond basic processing. From Processors to Strategists Perhaps the most significant evolution I’ve experienced in my career is the changing nature of

our role. As technology handles more routine processing, we’re stepping into more strategic positions, bringing our skills, experience and training to bear. We’re analysing workforce costs and forecasting, advising on salary sacrifice schemes, and helping organisations understand the financial implications of workforce changes before they happen. This transition means moving beyond transaction processing to deliver insights and guidance. It means developing deeper expertise in specialised areas like global mobility and strategic workforce planning. It means becoming advisors who help clients capitalise on the huge amount of data that flows through a payroll process, helping them make data-driven decisions about their most significant asset – their people.
