Adult-Onset Asthma: Proof That Your Lungs Can Have Midlife Crises Too! by Peter Yurek, BSc. Phm.

Letter from the Editor New

What is Asthma? Asthma is a chronic condition affecting the airways in the lungs, causing inflammation and narrowing of the bronchial tubes, which can make breathing difficult. The airways are surrounded by muscles and mucus glands, which normally stay relaxed. But when triggered, the muscles tighten, and the airways can fill with mucus, leading to asthma symptoms or an attack. Around 8% of Canadians aged 65 and older have asthma, which can either develop later in life (adult-onset asthma) or be a lifelong condition. Unfortunately, diagnosis is often missed in older adults because they may attribute symptoms to aging, poor fitness, or other health issues. If left untreated, asthma can be particularly risky for seniors. Anyone experiencing shortness of breath, wheezing, or chest tightness should consult a doctor. What is Adult-Onset Asthma? Adult-onset asthma refers to asthma diagnosed in people over 20, and while asthma often starts in childhood, it can develop at any age. Those more likely to develop adult-onset asthma AYLMER

may have had certain illnesses (like colds), allergies (especially to cats), reflux (GERD), obesity, or exposure to environmental irritants like tobacco smoke or mould. Women going through menopause or taking estrogen after menopause for 10+ years are also at higher risk. Asthma in Older Adults Asthma symptoms in older adults may be confused with other health issues like chronic bronchitis or heart disease, which is common, especially in smokers. Asthma can first show up in people in their 60s or 70s, but the symptoms are similar to younger individuals, including wheezing, chest tightness, or chronic coughing. Please see your doctor or nurse practitioner so they can test you for asthma. Make sure they understand all your health conditions and know about all medicines (including over‑the‑counter). Soon you’ll feel better.
