Avery Dennison Awarded How2Recycle Label Avery Dennison has become the first pre-qualified intelligent labels provider to receive the How2Recy- cle label for RFID paper hang tags, recognizing they are as easy to recycle as many of the products they appear on. The How2Recycle label was created to provide con- sistent and transparent on-package recycling infor- mation to consumers in North America and involves a coalition of brands that want their packaging to be recycled and are empowering consumers through in- telligent packaging labels. How2Recycle is a part of GreenBlue, an independent environmental non-profit organization. The label has been assigned based on several factors that How2Recycle considers, including applicable law, access to recycling, sortation, reprocessing, and end markets. This development follows many years of research within Avery Dennison Smartrac to develop a unique combination of materials, adhesives, and inlay con- struction to enable RFID labels to be recycled along- side any other residential recycling stream, meaning they can be transformed with any other paper-based materials.

DS Smith Embeds Circular Design Metrics

DS Smith, a sustainable packaging producer with U.S. headquarters inAtlanta,Georgia, and global head- quarters in London, England, has embedded its Cir- cular Design Metrics across all its packaging sites to support the transition to a circular economy and help customers achieve environmental, social and gover- nance (ESG) goals. The company said this action advances its commit- ment “to meeting customer needs as the corporate world embraces ESG and works to set and meet targets that reduce environmental impacts.” DS Smith reported that a recent KPMG survey of 1,325 chief executives indicated that 58 percent are “seeing increased demands from stakeholders—such as investors, regulators and customers—for increased reporting and transparency on ESG issues.” To address these ESG demands, DS Smith said it can measure and quantify the sustainability performance of each of its packaging designs across eight key in- dicators: carbon footprint, design for reuse, supply chain optimization, recyclability, planet safety, materi- al utilization, renewable source and recycled content. The Circular Design Metrics will enable brands and retailers to compare DS Smith’s different design solu- tions, helping them to reduce waste and pollution and keep materials and products in use for longer, DS Smith stated.Additionally, the Circular Design Met- rics supplies brands and retailers with data that can be shared in their ESG reporting to demonstrate what they are doing to reduce their carbon footprints. DS Smith released its Circular Design Principles in 2020 in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foun- dation, and the company said all of its 700 designers have been trained on how to apply the principles to design packaging solutions for the circular economy. In addition, DS Smith said it has a goal to manufacture 100 percent reusable or recyclable packaging by 2023. Huhtamaki Completes Acquisition Of Elif Huhtamaki, Espoo, Finland, has completed the acqui- sition of Elif Holding (Elif), a supplier of sustainable flexible packaging to global FMCG brand owners, with operations in Turkey and in Egypt. Flint Group Introduces Enhanced-Recycling Coatings Flint Group Narrow Web has introduced two UV- flexo coating products to improve the recyclability for shrink sleeves and pressure sensitive labels. These coatings are currently available in North America and will soon be available in Europe and other regions. Using different chemistries, the Evolution Deinking Primer, for shrink sleeves, and the Evolution Caustic Resistant Overprint Varnish (OPV), for self-adhesive la- bels, are designed to increase the yield of material in the recycling process. Both coatings have been recog- nized by theAssociation of Plastic Recyclers to comply with the critical guidance for PET packaging. The Evolution Deinking Primer is a coating used on shrink sleeve materials that reportedly makes the ink release in the caustic bath of the recycling process. When used with crystallizable polyester shrink sleeve material (CPET), the primer keeps the ink anchored to the substrate through the usable life of the sleeve, but releases it in the caustic bath. The ink is removed from the sleeve material without contaminating the valuable bottle flake. The materials are then rinsed and pelletized into recycled polyester (rPET) for reuse. Evolution Deinking Primer is applied by the conven- tional UV-flexo process and works with Flint Group’s EkoCure XS flexo inks that are specially designed for shrink sleeves. The second product, the Evolution Caustic Resistant OPV, is a UV-flexo overprint varnish to facilitate recy- cling PET bottles utilizing pressure-sensitive labels. The varnish minimizes contamination of the wash wa- ter and bottle flake in the caustic bath by keeping the ink secured to the label substrate. When immersed in the float-sink bath, the label is released from the bottle and floats to the surface where it is separated from the bottle recycling stream. Neither the Deinking Primer nor the Caustic Resis- tant OPV has any impact on ink color, image quality or code readability, according to the manufacturer. I.D. Images Relocates Headquarters I.D. Images LLC, a pressure sensitive label converter with headquarters in Brunswick, Ohio has moved to a larger facility in Brunswick. The new facility will greatly enhance capacity as well as provide expanded capabilities for customers. “We are excited to expand our space in Northeast Ohio from just over 45,000 square feet to over 100,000 square feet,” said Brian D. Gale, President and CEO of I.D. Images.
