ANCC and the Civil War Convalescent Camp

to all of the Club’s facilities and activities. The program is only open to NEW Members. ~ 1.5 of Resident Monthly Dues

Early events during the Civil War contributed in many ways to the historical aura of the Club. One of those events is the account of the establishment and ultimate demise of Camp Convalescent situated on the banks of Rapid Run, along four present golf holes close to Army Navy Drive. The aftermath of the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861 left thousands of wounded in dire need of care. Hundreds of those were sent to the newly established Camp for treatment. Unfortunately, the principal medical procedure in that era for men shot in the extremities was amputation. The large number of amputations in the Camp resulted in the legend that “Rapid Run ran red with blood from the ministrations of surgeons caring for the Bull Run wounded”. Such treatment poorly administered, along with harsh living conditions, lack of supplies, and inadequate clothing and shelter soon led to the Convalescent Camp being referred to as “Camp Misery”. Under mostly miserable conditions, the Camp remained active until February 1864.
