Alzheimer’s and Other Forms of Dementia In our 2022-2023 Community Needs Assessment, a significant concern raised by older adults and their caregivers was the impact of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. These conditions not only affect memory and cognitive function but also have far-reaching implications for the well-being of individuals and their families.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are 10 to 12 million older Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and some form of cognitive impairment in 2024. In 2020, 11% of Arizona’s population was living with Alzheimer’s disease, a number expected to rise as the population ages. In 2023, 292,000 caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias in Arizona provided an estimated 483 million hours of informal (unpaid) assistance, a contribution valued at $10.228 billion. In Pima County, the growing prevalence of dementia underscores the urgent need for comprehensive support and resources. Our survey highlighted that many older adults are worried
about developing dementia, and caregivers are concerned about the resources available to manage these conditions effectively. PCOA’s initiative, Dementia Capable Southern Arizona, launched in 2020, is a critical response to these concerns. Dementia Capable Southern Arizona Developed in partnership with the Administration for Community Living and the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, this program offers a robust support system for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers and works to increase our community’s understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Screening and Early Detection: Early diagnosis is essential for effective dementia management. Our program provides routine memory screenings at numerous locations around Pima County, ensuring early identification and timely intervention. Care Coordination and Referrals: Options counseling and referrals, assisting families with finding specialized providers and community resources tailored to their needs. Memory Cafés: Our community-supported memory cafés provide a welcoming environment for social interaction and mutual support, helping to foster community and alleviate feelings of isolation. Community Education Dementia-Friendly Community: Working alongside local governments, PCOA is creating a dementia-friendly community plan to make Southern Arizona a better place for people living with dementia and those who care for them. Public Awareness Campaigns: We conduct targeted campaigns to raise awareness about dementia’s signs and symptoms, the importance of early detection, and available resources. These efforts help reduce stigma and encourage individuals to promptly seek help.
