MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF MARIAN UNIVERSITY
students will be prepared to excel in their chosen professions and other leadership roles they assume throughout their lives. This simple yet profound promise is accomplished by: 1. An education illumined by the light of faith and grounded in values and ethics; 2. Challenging academic programs supported by a vibrant and caring community that guides students in achieving excellence; 3. Innovative, active, and engaged approach to learning on campus and beyond; and, 4. Leadership education that prepares a Trustworthy, Healthy, Inquisitive, and Skilled leader. What is next for Marian University as we boldly venture forward in this decade of service to our students, the professions, and the common good? The strategic plan Journey to 2030: Always Forward , constructed after much research, discussion, and prayer, directs Marian University to a whole new level as a world-class university. Our vision, mission, values, and three strategic priorities center on: 1) Student Access and Success ; 2) Science, Technology, Engineering, Health professions, and Math [STEHM] illumined by the Liberal Arts; and, 3) Faith, Character, and Ethics in Action. Journey to 2030: Always Forward will require considerable resources – excellent leadership, highly skilled professionals, expanded finances, and partnerships that are second to none. It is a worthy journey. Much like Mother Theresa when she journeyed from Austria to Oldenburg, Indiana. Much like when the Sisters of Oldenburg built Marian College during the Great Depression and moved to Indianapolis in 1937. Much like the visionary leadership of the Board of Trustees during this century transforming Marian College to a great Carnegie-1 university. Yes, it will take resources. Yes, it will take a generous effort. Yes, it will take much prayer and grace. This magnanimous effort is more than important to Marian University; It is critically necessary in the times in which we live and for the future we wish to create for our students, our nation, and the world.
President Daniel J. Elsener delivers the Commencement Address at the Graduate and Doctoral Students Commencement Ceremony on May 8, 2022.
Words cannot adequately express my appreciation, nor the thankfulness of Marian University students, colleagues, or the enterprises that have benefited from our graduates’ outstanding influence in the world. My hope is that, reflection on the tremendous good work our alumni are doing - in education, health care, business, engineering, ministry, science, and more - brings you great satisfaction and edification that words will never fully convey. Through this prayerful reflection, you can be assured you are partnering in an enduring legacy of the highest purpose and consequence. Gratefully,
Daniel J. Elsener, President
