expectation. His so called nouveau flamenco has always borrowed from tradition without submitting to it. The bright nylon string guitar, the rhythmic undercurrent, the faint echoes of Andalusian phrasing are all there, but stripped of excess. He leaves out the drama, the speed, the showmanship that defines classical flamenco, and in doing so creates something far more controlled. In other hands, it might have been an opportunity to dazzle. Liebert treats it like a study in restraint. He circles the material, stretches it, pares it back, and that’s the quiet appeal. Ottmar’s style offers control, patience, and a level of confidence that borders on indifference to expectation. Personally I’d hate to think you’d dismiss music like this as background. Sit with it, and the details begin to surface. The subtle shifts in phrasing, the way rhythm anchors each piece, the careful pacing that keeps everything from drifting too far.
