NEWSLETTER LiRo-Hill PROJECT SPOTLIGHT South Battery Park City Resiliency Project, Battery Park City Authority Laura Gray, PE, Senior Vice President Construction Management Battery Park City, NY
Can you tell me a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in the industry? Growing up, I excelled in science and math. My father is also an electrical engineer. I received scholarship money to study engineering and I was strongly encouraged to pursue it. I was offered a job by a large NYC Contractor after I graduated that paid more than the design job I was offered and have remained in construction since.
Can you describe the project you’re currently working on? What are its main objectives and significance? I am currently working on the South Battery Park City Resiliency Project, which is located at the southern tip of Manhattan and a component of the overall Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency Project. The construction cost is approximately $245M. The project involves raising the existing elevation over 10 feet in certain areas as well as constructing a seepage barrier below grade across the floodwall alignment. The entirety of Wagner Park, Pier A Plaza, and a portion of Battery Park will be reconstructed. The grade will be adjusted with the use of fill materials, new walls and flip up gates. Existing outfalls within the project area will be retrofitted with tide gates that will be shut during significant tidal events. The project involves significant relocation of existing below grade utilities as well as working over and adjacent to the NYCDOT Battery Tunnel Underpass, Brooklyn Battery Tunnels and NYCT 1 Train Tunnels. A new architectural cast in place concrete Pavilion building that will receive ILFI Zero Carbon Certification will ultimately be the project’s focal point. What impact do you hope this project will have on the community or industry once it’s completed? I hope that the project will fulfill its purpose of protecting a portion of lower Manhattan from significant storm events and make the area more resilient to climate change. I also hope that once the area is reopened to the public, it will become a real destination in lower Manhattan.
What future trends or developments are you most excited about? Although there is still a long way to go, I am excited about any way to reduce waste in construction. On the project I am currently working on, we are utilizing foamed glass aggregate as lightweight fill. This product is comprised of 99% recycled glass and has been approved as a substitute for geofoam. What advice would you give to young women who are interested in pursuing a career in the industry? Believe in yourself and your goals and know the project better than anyone else.
