THE REGISTRY ER

MEREDITH KAYE SUMMERS & JOSEPH JAMES HARRIS CHARLESTON | 6.22.19

meredith, a charleston native, and Joseph, originally from Delhi, New York, were introduced by a mutual friend in December 2011 while both were attending college in New York City. Soon after, they shared a first date at Lincoln Center in New York City. The couple returned to that spot six years later when Joseph decided the time was right to propose. They knew their ceremony would be nontraditional. The bride wore a purple gown, a homemade tiara, and a necklace that she made from material she took from wedding dresses worn by the bride’s grandmothers and mother. She also carried a bouquet of origami flowers decorated with buttons that had belonged to her late great-grandmother. The groom wore a gray suit with a matching purple tie and a pocket square that belonged to his maternal grandfather. The bride was escorted by her father to the altar, where she and Joseph exchanged original vows. The ceremony music was also nontraditional, including selections by popular bands Bowling for Soup and Fall Out Boy and “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” a Death Cab For Cutie cover by Terri Mattheson. For the reception, the couple chose the theme Almost Heaven Meets the Empire State. The bride made origami flowers for the centerpieces, bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres, and cake topper. Guests were treated to a burrito bar, board games, and dancing. The three-tiered wedding cake featured a chai-flavored layer with spice cream cheese frosting, an orange pekoe tea– flavored layer with cream cheese frosting, and an Earl Grey-flavored layer with lavender- flavored cream cheese frosting. The couple had Blenko Glass design commemorative coins in the shape of a heart with their initials. Following a wedding trip to Clearwater Beach, Florida, the couple returned home to Charleston, where Meredith works as a high school English teacher and Joseph as a theater technician.
