Lawn Bowling – The Best Kept Secret in Lambeth
leading to an escape from the pressures of everyday life. The repetitive nature of the athlete’s delivery induces a state of flow where the mind is married to the moment. All is well in the world. That is, until the jack is moved by an opposition bowl and one’s vision of the perfect end comes to nought. Unlike curling where the house remains stationary, the target jack in lawn bowling can be re-positioned as the end unfolds. This wrinkle adds another intriguing dimension to the game. However, the game is much more than the sum of its com- petitive parts. It is inherently social, fostering interaction and camaraderie among participants. The jitney format of play allows those on hand to be placed on different teams each evening. If any of this sounds enticing, please join us for our free National Bowls Day Open House planned for Saturday, June 7th from 2 to 4 pm at our location at 4326 Colonel Talbot Road. We are on the south-east corner of Wharncliffe Road (Main Street) and Colonel Talbot Road in Lambeth. Just wear flat-soled shoes and comfortable clothes and be prepared to roll a few bowls with the guidance of our certified coaches. This, my friends, is lawn bowling. The game has been traced back some 5,000 years to ancient Egypt. Evidence suggests it was played in Rome and Greece at the height of their civilizations. It was in the Middle Ages in Britain when lawn bowling morphed into a closer version of the game which is played today. Today, lawn bowling provides healthy, gentle exercise for men and women of all ages in a relaxed, social environment. Not unlike its winter cousin curling, the game calls for flexibility, balance, hand-eye coordination and an acquired sense of muscle memory. As in golf, the game reveals one’s character through skill, strategy and self-control. The strategic nature of the game cannot be overemphasized. As curling has been referred to as “chess on ice”, lawn bowling can be likened to “chess on grass”. The game’s demand of total focus and concentration offers the players a sense of mindfulness
