Historic Hyde Park Unger family traditions endure and expand
When Nickolas Unger and his German Mennonite family immigrated from Russia to Canada in 1925, they brought more than just their personal belongings. They brought their work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, tried and true recipes, and their commitment to family – all of which were passed along to the next generations.
The Unger family worked hard, building memories and traditions with their family. As family recipes were developed and shared, the business expanded, and eventually Unger’s Market on Gainsborough Road just east of Hyde Park was opened to offer fresh foods and produce to the community. There, Unger’s Market still offers fresh local meats, produce, baking, jams and preserves, family-heritage recipes (casseroles, chip dips, sandwiches, salads, etc.) as well as gifts and fashions. It is still a family business, managed by descendants of the original Nickolas Unger! Chris and Greg Unger invite you to stop in.
Nickolas’s son Wilbert, his wife Linda Doerksen, whose German, Mennonite father also immigrated from Russia, along with their five children, above, began their own family traditions. This started with selling their home grown vegetables at fruit stands in 1984, one on Dundas Street, and one in the Old Country Market on Little Simcoe Street.

Neighbour of Note: Corrina DiLella Cameron
Since she was very young, Corrina DiLella Cameron has been an observer of nature and a creator of things. “My mother was my first art teacher and nurtured that potential by teaching me to take what I observed about the world and apply it to art making. I find great enjoyment in that process, both the observing and the making. My husband and I love the Medway Forest and hike it regularly. It’s great to have an escape to nature so close by.” An interdisciplinary artist, Corrina chooses different mediums based on what will do the job best. “The artwork starts with an idea and then I match the medium to the concept. Since an idea could span over many artworks, it does make it feel like I’m going through a phase. Currently, I’m primarily working in oil painting and pottery.” Corrina’s formal art training took place at Lakehead University and York University, with a primary focus on painting and ceramics. “I graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University in 2010. Continuing art education has included classes at the London Clay Art Centre, The Arts Project, and Haliburton School of Art and Design.” A marketing coordinator and senior art teacher at a small private high school in London, Corrina enjoys creating safe spaces for students to discover their unique artistic voice and watch them take brave steps towards mastery. She says that as an artist, some important career highlights have been overcoming artist’s block, creating a studio in my basement, and recently being accepted into my first commercial gallery – Westland Gallery in Wortley Village. Long ago, Corrina decided that 10% of her profits would go to charity. “In 2024, I focused my donations towards World Central Kitchen who are providing meals for victims of natural disasters and war across the globe. Your investment in my art is also an investment in bettering our world!”
Corrina offers pottery, and original paintings in oil, acrylic, or watercolour. “As I create each piece, I think about how it will become part of someone’s life. My hope is that my work will bless you and your home for years to come,” she says. Complimentary home installation is available upon request. Spring Maintenance Tips 1. Ensure your car’s undercarriage is clean by visiting a car wash that offers a thorough undercarriage wash or using a high- pressure garden hose to remove salt, sand, and grime that can cause erosion. 2. Give your car a deep clean both inside and out to get rid of winter residue, wax the exterior, clean floor mats, and declutter the trunk. 3. Swap out your winter tires for all-season or performance tires once the temperature consistently rises above 7°C. 4 Have your brakes checked for any salt-related corrosion while getting your tires changed at a service center. 5 Check your tire alignment and consider rotating your tires if you kept them on during the winter. 6 Monitor your tire pressure regularly, especially during temp- erature changes, to ensure optimal performance. 7. Replace your wiper blades to prepare your car for the changing seasons.

How the Streets Got Their Names Opened in 1967, Hyde Park’s first side street was named after the village’s founders, Thomas and Elizabeth Routledge. Both born in 1763 in England, they were among the first settlers in the township, arriving in 1818, and owned several hundred acres of land on the northwest corner of the hamlet. It is surmised that they named the area after the park in their birth country. The couple had three daughters and six sons. Their eldest daughter Margaret was married in 1820 to Thomas Carling of the Carling Brewery. Descendants of the family resided in Hyde Park as late as 1967.

Event Details Questions to Ask Your Financial Advisor and use it as a guideline for making investment choices – so it’s definitely an issue to discuss with your financial advisor.
How will changes in my life affect my investment strat- egy? Your life is not static. Over time, you may experience any number of major events, such as marriage, children, new jobs and so on. When you meet with your financial advisor, you will want to discuss these types of changes, because they can affect your long-term goals and, consequently, your investment decisions. How are external forces affecting my investment port- folio? Generally speaking, you will want to create an investment strategy that’s based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. And, as mentioned above, you may need to adjust your strategy based on changes in your life. But should you also make changes based on outside forces, such as interest rate movements, political events, new legislation or news affecting industries in which you have invested substantially? Try not to make long-term investment decisions based on short- term news. Yet, talk with your financial advisor to make sure your investment portfolio is not out of alignment with relevant external factors.
Join us You should always be able to ask as many questions as you’d like when working with your financial advisor. So, before you have your annual review, think carefully about what you’d like to ask. Here are a few suggestions: Am I still on track? When you first began working with your financial advisor, you may well have articulated a number of financial goals. For example, you might have said that you wanted to pay for your children’s education, or that you wanted to retire at a certain age, or that you wanted to travel for two months each year during your retirement. In fact, you could have many different goals for which you’re saving and investing. When you meet with your financial advisor, you’ll certainly want to ask if you’re still on track toward meeting these goals. If you are, you can continue with the financial strategies you’ve been following; but if you aren’t, you may need to adjust your savings strategy, time horizon, or a combination of both.

The financial markets always fluctuate, and these movements will affect the value of your investment portfolio. If you watch the markets closely every day and track their impact on your investments, you may find yourself fretting considerably over your investments’ value and wondering if you are taking on too much investment risk for your comfort level. Neighbour of Note: Teri May by Richard Young
To advertise here, please contact Cathy@VillagerPublications.com The Artful Players present Groovin’ for Good: A Fundraiser for the London Food Bank, Thursday, May 15, 2025, 7:00 pm at “Everyone is volunteering their own time, and the Palace Theatre is being provided at no charge. All proceeds are being donated to the London Food Bank. We invite all Londoners to help us in this great cause.” In 2023, Teri got involved with Silver Spotlight Theatre, a community theatre group exclusively for people fifty-five and older, solely because her old teacher Art Fidler created it. “The opportunity to reconnect with him was too good to pass up. It was also right after the pandemic and I thought it out be a good opportunity to meet new people, socialize and have some fun. I was right!” “I have been involved in all three of the group’s productions. I was the Choreographer and a Reporter in Babes In Arms, Cha Cha in Grease , and moved backstage as Assistant Stage Manager and the voice of The Giant in Into The Woods. ” At present, Teri is the Stage Manager for The Artful Players, a group of community theatre veterans that evolved out of a social gathering at which they started talking about the increase of food insecurity for many Londoners. “This turned into ‘Hey kids, let’s put on a show!’” says Teri. “Our inaugural performance is a fundraiser for the London Food Bank called Groovin’ For Good , a collection of songs, singalongs, old skits and classic commercials from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The night includes a Silent Auction with a wide array of items generously donated by local businesses, arts organizations, and artisans. Food and cash donations will also be accepted at the door.” Longtime Oakridge resident, Teri May, was bitten by the theatre bug while attending Oakridge Secondary School in the late 1970s. “I was a bit of an outlier and didn’t belong to any of the cool cliques at school,” she recalls. “My good memories all revolve around Art Fidler and his English and Drama classes and field trips to the Stratford Festival. The seed for my love of theatre and Shakespeare was planted then.” “I was too frightened to audition for the school plays, so I helped behind the scenes with makeup, costumes and props. In my final year, Art convinced me to audition, and I was cast in the ensemble of George M!, the Broadway musical based on the life of George M. Cohan. I loved it!” After leaving high school, Teri attended The University of Western Ontario where she earned a degree in Sociology/Psychology. After graduating, she joined the Canadian Armed Forces (Air Force) in 1985. She became a Logistics Officer (Captain) coordinating Supply, Transport, Finance and Personnel in various bases around Canada and finished her career as a Recruiting Officer in Toronto. “While in the service, I participated in acting venues playing an infiltrator and numerous spies and ‘bad guys’ during War Games. I also participated in Base Variety Shows,” Teri says. After serving twenty-one years, Teri returned to London in 2019, where she purchased a home in her “old stomping grounds” of Oakridge. “I love the area not only for its nostalgic aspect but because the neighbourhoods are clean, safe and friendly. I am close to everything I need,” she says.

WHY PRINT? While e-newsletters average click-through rates from 0.5 to 1.6%, a printed direct mail newsletter can generate a 3 to 5% response rate, according to an article in Graphics Arts magazine . Mailchimp pegs the average click-through for all marketing emails at 2.62% while Canada Post direct mail campaigns elicit 39% more attention (time spent reading). Studies show that 66% of consumers purchased a product because of direct mail. Even better than Direct Mail: Villager magazines are delivered by Canada Post to thousands of addresses in each of our ‘villages’ served. ALL about their local artisans and entrepreneurs, friends and neighbours, they’re read cover- to-cover, kept for posterity and read again. Contact your local Villager rep to get in on it!
