Heat and transport electrification could create 5,000NI jobs

A new report suggests that the electrification of Northern Ireland’s heating and transport systems could create up to 5,000 jobs and cut emissions by 82%. The KPMG study, commissioned by NIE Networks, said electrification could be transformative for the economy, reducing the spend on imported fossil fuels by around £1.4 billion a year. It comes as Stormont prepares to publish a new energy strategy toward the end of this year. Industry insiders expect the Executive to set a new target of sourcing 70% of electricity

from renewables by 2030. But KPMG’s new research claims that wider electrification has the potential to act as a catalyst for massive economic growth. The report puts the cost of change at £9.6bn over the next two decades, including £4bn for renewables, but it could inject £18.8bn GVA (gross value added) into the economy. The report also states that heat pumps could significantly displace Northern Ireland’s reliance on oil and gas for home heating, reaching 375,000 premises by 2040, at a cost of £3.4bn.

Premier Electrics peak for cancer charity

A team from Premier Electrics scaled the Seven Peaks Challenge recently, raising £4,250 in aid of Action Cancer. This daunting challenge proved to be a test of physical fitness and will for the team of seven, which involved hiking the seven highest peaks of the Mourne Mountains consecutively. The Premier Electrics team – Robert McMath, Justin Hamill, Darren Dougan, Barry Johnston, John McMullan, Liam Martin and Benny McPeake - completed the challenge within 13 hours, each covering over 18 miles and climbing over 8,100 feet. The money raised will assist Action Cancer in providing vital cancer prevention, detection and support services in Northern Ireland. Well done to the team who can be rightly proud of this fantastic achievement! You can support this great cause at Premier Electrics’ Just Giving page: https://bit.ly/2WSEjJs
