PRINCIPAL REPORT

BILL PANAS ACTING COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

Dear Lakes Families,

As 2023 comes to its end, the need to reflect, acknowledge and celebrate our achievements fills my head with incredible joy. We have all had moments where our exhaustion has overwhelmed us and reduced us to withering shells ready to crack like eggs on a sidewalk! We have all endured unimaginable moments of disbelief from behaviours that smack of pressure, misunderstanding or simply “ crying out for help ”! We have braved the coldest of winters, a continuing pandemic, illness, high absenteeism and uncertainty both at work and in our homes. The conditions to successfully teach and collaborate, share and celebrate student, family and staff journeys may have been impacted by these difficulties and our own tribulations. So, the decision we made at the start of the year to make our college motto, our workplace “ The Happy Place ” has been vindicated in so many ways. What I have seen are passionate, excited and committed groups of students sharing a common purpose.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT

What I have felt is sensitivity, belief and purpose towards individual students and the importance of our wellbeing! What I have been completely beguiled by is creativity in planning, in classes, addressing the wider and individual needs and beginning to take risks that will bring greater outcomes! What I have noticed is lots of positive conversations in every part of the school, with emphasis on improving our work, our students and ourselves!

What I feel and see is a wonderful atmosphere, a positive spirit, teaming laughter, some mischief and acceptance of everyone!

What I am excited about are our Prep enrolments are beginning to increase so our Kinders are actively engaging with us. Year 9 students are predominantly staying with us for their senior years which will have an enormous impact on subjects we can offer and run from 2024. With the support of our committed and focused School Council our outwardly appearance is changing to reflect and highlight what IS HAPPENING ON THE INSIDE! External fencing, pathways, new gardens, updated security, shade sails, a dedicated Year 7 area and a commitment to improving school safety and psychological safety for everyone is paramount! What we are noticing is that we are quickly building outstanding community partnerships underwritten by our whole school narrative of striving for academic excellence and high levels of school pride in all of our pursuits. We will continue our desire and commitment to engage former students by setting up an alumni, beginning a parent/carer and friends club/group and committing to many more opportunities that we have yet to uncover that celebrate and put student and staff achievements in neon lights! We have an endless opportunity to put our college at the top of the class! Where our programs and resources are equal to the amazing skill, knowledge, expertise, commitment and resilience of our staff! As parents, carers, guardians, critical friends and supports, “ Your every action, decision, behaviour and instruction facilitates what our learning culture will look, feel, smell and breathe like! No strategic plan or piece of paper will impact like you have done so successfully this year! ” I am feeling that our community is building something very special that will take us to many, many highs! With countless energy, goodwill and an ability to ride through bumps along the way WE WILL achieve in so many exciting ways and through many forms!

In closing and wishing you a wonderful holiday and festive season …

Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing festive season and holiday! Bonnie, Marcus & I will be waiting for the return of all of our lovely 710 plus students including many newbies with open arms on January 30, 2023 our “ Meet & Greet Day ”

Until then,

Thank you for sharing this journey. We are all in it together and there is no turning back!

Bill.

STAINED GLASS

BISCUIT RECIPE

About the author

Toni Dash, a Certified Nutrion Coach and the professional writer/blogger, photographer, recipe developer and creator of Boulder Locavore®. The original article is here: https://boulderlocavore.com/ stained - glass - cookies - recipe/

HOW TO MAKE IT

Stained Glass Biscuits are the Christmas biscuit showstop- pers! They are gorgeous and eye catching. The buttery sugar cookie with a thin layer of edi- ble candy stained glass are a delicious holiday dessert or make them into ornaments!

STEP 4. Add the Candy for the Stained Glass.

Separate the unwrapped candies by colour. Place each colour in a separate sealed plastic bag.

Wrap the plastic bag in a kitchen towel.

Using a rolling pin or meat mallet break the candy into small piec- es but not into pulverized dust . Add the crushed candy pieces into the centre of the cookie where the shape is cut out.

STEP 5. Bake the Cookies. Bake the cookies for 10 - 12 minutes until the shortbread is no longer shiny and the hard candy pieces have completely melt- ed. Do not allow the cookies to brown !

STEP 1. Make the Cookie Dough.

Cool completely on the baking sheet until the candy centers have hardened before moving the cookies.

In a large bowl or bowl of a stand mixer beat together the butter and sugar. Use a mixer on medium speed.

Add the eggs, vanilla extract and salt. Mix to fully combine.

STORING THE COOKIES Store at room temperature (in a cool, DRY location) for 2 days in a sealed container. Separate layers with parchment paper or wax paper.

Slowly add flour and mix just until combined (do not overmix).

STEP 2. Chill the Dough.

Do not store them in the refrigerator . The moisture can cause the hard candy centre to become sticky.

Cover the dough and chill for 1 hour.

While the dough is chilling:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

PRO TIPS Break the hard candy into small pieces not dust . Don ’ t pulver- ize the candy as this can cause it to overcook and become grainy. Break into small pieces only. Use Jolly Ranchers for the hard candy . You ’ ll be pleased with the colour and how well they work. Keep the dough cold . If you feel it will take some time to roll out the dough.

Line a baking sheet with a silicon baking mat or parchment pa- per.

STEP 3. Cut out the Cookies.

Roll the chilled dough out on a lightly floured surface to 1/2 - inch thick. Cut out the desired shapes ensuring a large shape. Use a small- er cookie cutter to cut out the space for the stained glass.

Place shapes onto the prepared baking sheet.

http://www.thelakes.edu.au/uploads/8/3/9/0/83901006/ first_aid_policy_2022.pdf

From time to time The Lakes South Morang College staff might need to administer first aid to students at school or during school activities. Parents/carers should be aware that the goal of first aid is not to diagnose or treat a condition. Students who are unwell should not attend school. If a student becomes unwell during the school day they may be directed to First Aid and monitored by staff. Depending on the nature of their symptoms, staff may contact parents/ carers or an emergency contact person to ask them to collect the student. If there is a situation or incident which occurs at school or during a school activity which requires first aid to be administered to a student:

Staff who have been trained in first aid will administer first aid in accordance with their training. In an emergency situation, other staff may assist in the administration of first aid within their level of competence. In a medical emergency, staff may take emergency action and do not need to obtain parent/carer consent to do so. Staff may contact Triple Zero “000” for emergency medical services at any time. If first aid is administered for a minor injury or condition, The Lakes South Morang College will notify parents/carers by a Sentral email or phone call.
