Youth quilt displayed at Nav Can helps students belong

The Journal jcornwall@eap.on.ca

One student, who identified himself only as Bruno on his panel, wrote about the warm sense of belonging he felt when he visited Switzerland to see his extended fam- ily. Other students celebrated the value of belonging to native culture with artwork showing various nature scenes, while an- other wrote of a sense of home inspired by the call of the bagpipes. Perhaps one of the most touching panels on the Youth Quilt was created by Lochlan MacDonald, a Grade 6 student at Laggan Public School. MacDonald designed a Celt- ic-themed panel displaying Scottish flags and a tartan as well as a message celebrat- ing the value of inclusion. “Most people have their place of belong- ing, whether it is their family or a group of friends,” he wrote. “If they don’t, I will help them find a place.” The project also allowed students to unite and show their communities what can be accomplished when students work togeth- er toward a common goal, said Beaudette. “When they are able to go through the exhibition of their quilt they realize they are part of something much bigger than them- selves,” she said. “It magnifies the sense of belonging.” James Lauzon, a Grade 5 student at Lag- gan Public School, said the Youth Quilt was a great way to showcase the value of char- acter traits such as responsibility, caring, and perseverance. “I think it shows that students really do care about them because they’re putting their work out there for quite a few people to see so they’ve got to really care,” he said. The Quilt of Belonging is an impressive 120-foot tapestry designed to celebrate the cultural legacy of Canada’s First Nations and every country in the world through hun- dreds of panels created by volunteers from across Canada. Both the Quilt of Belonging and Youth Quilt were on display Friday and Saturday at the Nav Centre for area students and oth- ers to enjoy.

It’s 800 panels worth of caring, persever- ance, responsibility and empathy inter- woven in a tapestry of belonging. The Upper Canada District School Board unveiled a unique art project Thursday night to showcase the importance our sys- tem places on character. The Youth Quilt Project was officially pre- sented to the community during an eve- ning ceremony at the Nav Centre. The project is a testament to Esther Bry- an’s Quilt of Belonging, and encouraged students from seven schools in the UCDSB and Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Edu- cation to build an extension of the famous quilt. The work of art is comprised of about 800 eight-by-eight-inch panels mounted on coloured backgrounds that flow through the spectrum of colours in the same way as the Quilt of Belonging. The panels bear students’ own messages of character such as caring and responsibility. Students were also encouraged to express why attaining a sense of belonging is important. The quilt took months to make and in- volved students from kindergarten to Grade 12 from Williamstown Public School, Laggan Public School, Glengarry District High School, Cornwall Collegiate and Vo- cational School, South Branch Elementary School, Rothwell-Osnabruck School and TSI Snaihne School. The undertaking helped students deeply analyze and understand the true impor- tance of character traits such as respon- sibility, caring, empathy and respect, said Brenda Beaudette, UCDSB principal of con- tinuous school improvement. “It’s really easy to just throw out a word in class, but when you’re actually asked to give examples in art and talk about what sorts of emotions that word invokes in you – well that takes the understanding to a whole new level,” explained Beaudette.
