Thinking Matters 2017

‘I have a renewed appreciation for the importance of multi-faith dialogue.’ Henry Bichard, Year 8 The RT enrichment day saw Year 9 embark on a trip to Glastonbury and Stonehenge, where boys learned about medieval monks and paganism in England. ‘The RT trip had the perfect information: fun ratio. I learned a lot from the trip, I would recommend to others and would go again if the opportunity came up.’ Lekh Joshi, Year 9 The RT department set off for Turkey at the end of October 2015 with a mixture of excitement and a certain amount of trepidation. Famously spanning the divide between Asia and Europe, Turkey is struggling to span far deeper internal divisions. October saw the worst ever terrorist atrocity in the capital, a re-run of disputed parliamentary elections, the collapse of a ceasefire with Kurdish militants, and the influx of some two million refugees from neighbouring Syria. All boys on the trip gained a strong sense of what a melting-pot Turkey – and especially Istanbul – is. ‘The Istanbul trip was a truly fun event while posing much for us to learn about. The cultural melting pot in a politically tense world was an eye opener and the surrounding architecture and call to prayers have left a lasting impression on me.’ Tom Sampson, Year 12

In the Summer term the RT department took the whole of Year 8 on an adventure around places of worship in London. Boys enjoyed tours around the West London Synagogue and the Catholic Cathedral in Westminster as well as Westminster Abbey. The tours included a trip up the tower of the Westminster Cathedral and some handling of ancient Jewish artefacts in the Synagogue. During the afternoon a number of different histories and cultures were explored at the British Museum, including the history of Islamic civilizations and the Ancient Egyptians, before returning to Dulwich to have a question and answer session with a local vicar. A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all as we journeyed through different faiths and time-periods. The trip was an accolade to the commitment to free-learning within the RT department, weaving together different religions, histories and artefacts. ‘This trip opened my eyes to the variety and richness of religious history.’ Jake Connellan, Year 8
