Thinking Matters 2017

Over 200 students at the College took part in the IFS Student Investor Challenge, in which students work in teams of four to try to maximise the return on their £100,000 endowment of fictional money when playing the real stock market. ‘The competition was fantastic, as a team we were always thinking of which stocks to buy and which to sell. We made some good decisions and I was really pleased we made it to the Regional Final. Mr Bazalgette was really helpful. I feel that I’ve learned a lot about finance, and about how much I still don’t know about it!’ Jacob Potter, Year 12 Our Bank of England Target 2.0 team gave a fantastic presentation on their interest rate and quantitative easing policy suggestions to a panel of economists at an inter-schools competition and emerged victorious. They produced an impressive assessment of the state of the UK economy. The team of four defended their policies vigorously when challenged by the panel of experts.

‘In preparing for the Target 2.0 competition my knowledge of macroeconomics increased enormously. We learned new things every time we had our meetings and learned a lot about how to carry out research and use data to support my arguments.’ Guy Tilson, Year 13 (now OA) Many of the students have submitted essays in national competitions including the Royal Economic Society Essay Competition. Economics Students write articles for, and edit, the Department’s Political Economy Review publication, which is distributed on Founder’s Day, with proceeds going to the College’s Bursary Fund. ‘I felt an enormous sense of pride having my work published in the Political Economy Review . I thoroughly enjoyed researching and writing my article on the economic effects of Brexit. It was a topic I care deeply about, and I enjoyed being able to

express myself.’ Luke Henderson, Year 13
