Thinking Matters 2017

In a rapidly changing world, the ability to communicate at a high level in at least one (and usually two) foreign languages is becoming increasingly important. In addition to classroom teaching that embraces innovation and originality whilst maintaining strong linguistic standards, the Foreign Languages department believes strongly in the role of supra and co-curricular activities. ‘In March I went on the Spanish trip to Valencia, an experience that truly prepared me for my A level exam in the summer. During the mornings we attended conversational classes at the Taronja language school, where we discussed various topics through engaging debates relevant to our A level course. Particular highlights were a bike ride to the beach via a visit to La Ciudad De Las Artes y Las Ciencias, a cooking masterclass from the famous Chef Nando, exploring the vibrant city of Valencia where Las Fallas, a festival commemorating St Joseph was taking place, all of which created a great atmosphere to test our Spanish. I had heard many people say the Valencia school trip was the best during their time at Dulwich and this certainly proved to be the case.’ Nicholas Flay, Year 13 In November 2016 we offered boys the opportunity to further their language learning through Dulwich Linguistic, a week that celebrated languages and communication in all forms and challenged boys’ perceptions about language through free learning activities and seminars away from the classroom. We also widen boys’ horizons through 17 annual

trips and exchanges to China, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Large numbers of boys choose to take part in these trips and activities and their enthusiasm speaks for itself in their feedback! ‘ It was terrific to be able to spend a week living with a French family in Montpellier, who made us feel very welcome. My spoken language certainly improved, and the lessons in the language school were really fun and helpful, too. It was also great to spend time as a group on excursions in the afternoons.’ Sahil Madan, Year 13
