Péngyou Mob: Year 9 form the Chinese character for ‘friend’ on the 1st XI outfield.
the week encompassing introductions to Classical Hebrew and Old Norse, art in the modern and classical worlds, theatre and music. The College was uplifted by music throughout the week from impromptu guitar group flashmobs to more formal events. We were fortunate to welcome soprano Miss Susan Bullock CBE, as guest of honour to one of our two evenings of French, German and Spanish music. A sign language interpreter visited DUCKS and a ventriloquist taught the phonetics of language and his craft. DC Beijing pupils were interviewed during a Lower School assembly, highlighting the global Dulwich community and former members of the College joined our Chinese Business afternoon to talk about their experiences of living and working in China. Departments across the College offered a range of challenging and thought-provoking talks and activities aimed at stretching boys’ perceptions and ideas of what language means. Physical challenges included a ‘Tour de Dulwich’, Kung Fu demonstration, Fencing masterclasses in Italian and the DUCKS and Year 9 formation of the Chinese character for ‘friend’, ‘péngyou’, on the 1st XI outfield that was also photographed from the air! There was a real sense of linguistic purpose about the College throughout the week, with boys rushing from one activity to another challenging, celebrating and communicating while also earning stamps in their programme if they attended an activity. Parents, former pupils and students from local schools were also invited to see the Science telescope at our star-gazing event and to engage with US astronaut Shannon Walker via our live satellite connection on NASA night. In 2016, our third event, Dulwich Linguistic , provided a passport to crossing frontiers into the languages and cultures of countries beyond the English- speaking world. The week transformed all parts of the College into a veritable melting pot of events and activities crossing the imaginary divides between languages, science, music, mathematics, academia, business and sport. It was designed to challenge linguistic limits and our perceptions of how we see ourselves in a rapidly shrinking world and heighten our appreciation of communication in all its forms. The week was made up of three strands: Celebration, Communication and Challenge. In a celebration of all things linguistic, pupils were invited to share their favourite words, phrases and ideas, via the lesson hijack and our videobooth, on a wall of language shown on big screens and MyDulwich. As part of a Human Library, Lower School boys interviewed members of staff and other boys about their experiences of different cultures and languages. Special guest Huw Edwards led a career-focused Question Time with a panel of linguists from academia, business and journalism whilst other visiting speakers led seminars on topics from linguistics to French classical comedy.
Communication in all its forms was a cornerstone of
