THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME New Year, New You

With the new year comes new goals and a fresh outlook on life. Like many people, you are thinking about what you want to accomplish this year. You are setting resolutions and creating a game plan. It’s time for a new you in 2018! Every year, one of the top New Year’s resolutions is a smile makeover. Some people set their sights on whiter, brighter teeth. Others think about corrective or restorative options. No matter the goal, I’ve helped so many of our patients realize their dreams. Looking ahead, I’m excited to help more people accomplish their goals and to share my expertise as they reinvent themselves in the new year. I have no doubt 2018 is going to be incredible. Last month, I told you about the debut of Oral Essentials’ brand-new whitening strips. In the months since their release, I have heard nothing but rave reviews from everyone who’s tried them. They are a hit! People have noticed the contrast between Oral Essentials whitening strips and the strips they’ve used in the past. The days of sensitivity are gone. When it comes to teeth whitening and oral care in general, reducing sensitivity can make a significant difference in people’s lives. Sensitivity is a common issue. Sometimes, people will avoid everyday oral hygiene due to heightened sensitivity. This can lead to more serious issues, not to mention worsened sensitivity. One of my goals,

in the past and looking forward, is to do what I can to eliminate the discomfort that comes with tooth and gum sensitivity, as well as the discomfort associated with just about every dental treatment. This year, I’ll be continuing my focus on techniques and products that reduce or eliminate pain and discomfort. I’m also working on better and faster dental techniques. I know how much your time means to you and to all of our patients. If I can find a method that allows me to make a difference in a shorter amount of time, you can be sure I’ll implement it. When you couple new techniques with new technologies, you are left with a recipe for something incredible — something I know our patients will love. I can tell you much more will be coming to fruition in 2018 and beyond. Another goal for the new year is to continue to develop and debut new oral care products as part of the Oral Essentials line. There is a great need for products that use safe and naturally-derived ingredients and won’t cause harmful reactions. I hope your new year is off to a great start. I’m excited to see where 2018 takes us, and I look forward to helping you achieve your smile makeover goals.

NEWYEAR, NEW TECH! 3 of 2018’s Most Futuristic Gadgets

Along with a collection of short-lived resolutions, each new year brings a staggering array of wild technology. Here are a few of the coolest new gadgets predicted to hit the scene in 2018. A Microwave That Doubles as a Flash Fridge For a couple of years now, the Spanish-Korean company Frigondas has been developing a microwave that, in addition to perfectly warming up your leftovers, comes equipped with the ability to rapidly cool down foods. Not only can you use it to freeze fresh foods for later use, but you can toss a beer inside and let it chill in just a couple of minutes. A ‘Hybrid Reality Environment’ From Science Fiction Composed of 72 LCD panels, a 20-speaker immersive surround sound system, and an optical motion tracking system powered by 10 separate cameras, Cave2 is half virtual reality, half insanely futuristic whiteboard. After donning a pair of 3-D glasses, users, namely scientists and engineers, can fully immerse themselves in whatever they want, whether it’s a visualization of data that describes our solar system or, as exhibited in a recent demonstration, a model of Chicago, complete with real-time crime data. A TV That Generates Sound With Its Screen Instead of mounting on the wall or sitting an ordinary vertical television stand, the new Bravia TV comes equipped with a stand

that leans directly on the floor. There’s no visible stand or border. The processor and other essential components are all housed in its back unit. But what’s really interesting about this TV is the way it generates sound. Examining the unit, you’ll discover there’s not a single speaker to be found. Instead, Sony’s equipped the screen itself with four actuators that turn the entire screen into a sound-emitting device — a new technology called “Acoustic Surface.”

Sleep and Oral Health What You Don’t Know About

We all know brushing before bed is the key to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. You may be surprised to learn, though, that what happens after you brush can make a huge difference as well. Sleep quality has a massive impact on oral health, in regards to both periodontal disease and bad breath. A study commissioned by the Osaka University Graduate School of Dentistry, led by Dr. Muneo Tanaka, sought to examine the influence of lifestyle factors on gum disease. They observed 219 patients over the course of four years, monitoring hours of sleep, hours of work, exercise, alcohol use, smoking, eating breakfast, overall diet, and physical and mental stress. When the results came back, only smoking was a bigger risk factor than lack of sleep. Those patients who had seven to eight hours of sleep fared much better than those with six or fewer. “This study points out to patients that there are lifestyle factors other than brushing and flossing that may affect their oral health,” says Preston D. Miller Jr., DDS, president of the American Academy of Periodontology. “It is also important to keep these in mind as the body of evidence linking oral disease with systemic diseases continues to grow, because ultimately, these factors might impact

a patient’s overall health.” This connection is especially strong with periodontal disease. Heart surgeons have found the very same bacteria in clogged arteries as those in gums. Why does sleep matter so much? Well, it’s the time when your body restores itself. Your body needs to recover after strenuous exercise in order to get the most out of a workout, and the same is true for your mouth. At night, you’re more likely to breathe through your nose, which allows your mouth to produce more regenerative saliva. A good night’s sleep also lowers stress levels and regulates blood sugar. To make sure you’re getting the highest quality sleep, it’s important to establish a routine. The more your body clock can acclimate to a pattern of expected sleep, the less likely you will be to wake up in the middle of the night. Avoid eating right before bed, especially after you’ve brushed and flossed. Also, limit your screen time before bed to ensure a good night’s rest. Oral health is only one of the many benefits of getting more (and better) sleep. Rest up for increased focus, better memory, and brighter moods.

PISTACHIO GOJI BERRY Granola

Want to spruce up your morning yogurt? Top it with this tasty granola. Even better, swap out the dairy for coconut yogurt and enjoy your vegan breakfast.

• 1/3 cup pistachios, chopped • 1/4 cup coconut flakes • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/3 cup goji berries

• 1 tablespoon coconut oil • 3 tablespoons maple syrup

Instructions 1.

Heat a large skillet over low heat. Add oats in a thin layer and toast for 1–2 minutes. Add coconut oil and salt, then stir. Continue toasting for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Add maple syrup 1 tablespoon at a time; stir to coat. 3. Once oats are toasted, add pistachios, coconut flakes, and cinnamon. Cook slowly until pistachios and coconut flakes are toasted but not burned, for about 5 minutes. 4. Remove from pan and stir in goji berries. 5. The Time Is Right for Nicaragua

ESCAPE TO

After the hectic holiday season, many of us feel like we need another vacation just to unwind. Luckily, January and February are two of the best months to travel. Flight prices plummet and crowds thin out after the Christmas rush. If you’re looking to escape the dreary winter weather, there’s no better place to visit this season than Nicaragua, the “Central American country that has it all,” as Condé Nast Traveler puts it. Whether you’re looking to explore the rainforests surrounding the Río San Juan or get lost in the quirky-yet-beautiful architecture of Granada, there’s something for everyone in this tropical wonderland. One must-see destination is the Cerro Negro volcano. Just a baby at 150 years old, it’s one of the most active volcanoes in the region. It only takes about an hour to scale its smoking, black gravel surface, and the verdant forests surrounding the peak are a sight to behold. Adventurous travelers can board down the side, reaching ludicrous speeds as they teeter and try not to fall. In fact, it’s almost impossible to travel anywhere in the country without seeing an “I boarded a volcano” T-shirt.

If relaxing on a pearlescent beach is more your speed, take a short boat trip out to the Corn Islands. There, you can amble around the small towns bordering the shockingly blue Pacific, visit a number of laid- back seafood restaurants, get scuba certified for a fraction of the price anywhere else in the world, or just read your book as you swing in a hammock by the waves. You can also visit the gorgeous, alabaster Our Lady of Grace Cathedral in “new” Léon. The biggest church in all of Central America, this unique Baroque and neoclassicist structure was built in 1814. Visitors can climb onto its roof (as long as they don’t wear shoes) and bask in the view of surrounding volcanoes (including Cerro Negro). If you’re planning on heading to Nicaragua, it’s best to do it soon. Neighbor Costa Rica often overflows with tourists, and instead of wading through the crowds there, many travelers are catching on to what Nicaragua has to offer.
