Singing Ambassadors

L it t l e did we k n ow the size and significance of the project we un dertook when we embarked on “Op eration Singing San Diegan” at Radio Station KBBW. The plan was to provide a tour of Europe for a choir of Christian high school and college-age young people that would accomplish two goals: 1) Show the spiritual needs of Europe and Scan dinavia and challenge the hearts of those on the tour, and 2) Provide a genuine service and ministry to those who would hear the group sing and speak across Western Europe. 16

As it turned out, under God’s guid ance, it was probably the greatest public service project the radio sta tion ever undertook. In early 1965, San Diego Youth For Christ was asked to join in the effort as they knew the young peo ple of the area and Mr. Otis Skil lings, who was to direct the group, was a member of the Y.F.C. staff. Singers and chaperons were re cruited through spot announcements over the air on KBBW. Many nights of practice by the choir, months of arrangements for the concerts and

meetings themselves and careful co ordination of the trip plans with Christian airline representative, Mr. Keith Tucker of Scandinavian Air Lines, brought us to early August, 1965, and our departure date. Asking God’s blessing on the jour ney ahead, the Singing San Diegans flew to New York and the first two concert appearances at the World’s Fair.
