B il l y ! B i l l y ! where are you?” His mother called several times Billy?” she called to his father. His father hastily looked around the camp, but Billy was nowhere around. They had arrived at the mountain camp only an hour before and were busy getting their camp arranged. Billy, eleven years old, was so en thralled by the grandeur of the mountains that he just couldn’t re sist taking a look around. When he turned to go back to the camp, he took the wrong trail. Billy was lost. His parents searched the camp but when there was no response to their calls, they became alarmed and re ported to the ranger station. A search posse was quickly organized which combed the camp surround ings and near-by trails without suc cess. The alarm of the parents in creased. As the hours passed without any trace of Billy, the seriousness of their boy’s being lost somewhere in a canyon or on a rugged mountain trail almost crushed them. As the news spread, thousands of people became concerned about the safety of Billy. Volunteers came and offered their assistance in the search, and eventually he was found. There is a spiritual lostness which is much more serious than the physi cal. Jesus w a s deeply concerned about these. He told a parable about a sheep that was lost and how the shepherd went and sought it until it was found. He said, “ For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). We are commissioned as His dis ciples to share the same anxiety for the spiritually lost as these parents had for their lost son. Spiritual lost ness is much more serious than physical lostness. The lost often are not even aware of their condition. It may be a member of the family, a good friend, an acquaintance, a neighbor, or a fellow employee, all of whom should come within the sphere of our concern. If they are without Christ, they are lost. We are Christ’s representatives to find the lost and bring them back to the Father. Jesus said the return of one lost one would cause rejoicing in Heaven.
