by Earl C. Wolf Y e a r s a g o my father used to call cigarettes “ coffin nails.” He had no clear scientific evidence for this designation. He was “ just preach ing,” as some would have said. And yet recent medical findings prove his statement was not without basis. Father had a deep sense of the stewardship of the body. He was convinced that no one had a right to destroy his body by any type of indulgence. He believed that, if a person were a Christian, his body was “ the temple of the Holy Spirit” (I Corinthians 6:19) and he would be held accountable for any desecra tion of his body. He was convinced also from his personal observation that the use of tobacco was one way to desecrate the human body. Today my father would have had much more evidence for his conclu sions. In January of 1964, Surgeon General Luther Terry, chief of the United States Public Health Service, released a report giving clear evi dence that cigarette smoking is a major cause of lung cancer and other serious diseases. The conclusion of a ten-man scientific panel, spending fourteen months in its study of avail able evidence, cannot be lightly swept aside by thinking people. In addition to this report, twenty- eight studies in ten countries have arrived at the same conclusion. The report of the Royal College of Physi cians of London said: “ The most reasonable conclusions from all the evidence on the association between smoking and disease are: that ciga rette smoking is the most likely cause of the recent worldwide in crease in deaths from lung cancer . . . it is an important predisposing cause of the development of chronic bronchitis . . . cigarette smoking problably increases the risk of dying from coronary heart disease. . . .” Such scientific evidence demands responsible action. Certainly our government should take proper ac tion. Surgeon General Luther Terry said, “ Out of its long and exhaus tive deliberations the committee has reached the overall judgment that cigarette smoking is a health hazard of sufficient importance in the Unit ed States to warrant remedial ac tion.” Every citizen should lend his influence to see that this action is taken. A Jewish man heard the witness from an A. M. F. Missionary in Florida. Patiently, with an open Bible the worker focused upon the need for peace in the human heart. Then pointing out some of the 333 prophecies about the Messiah, which were fulfilled in Jesus, he turned to Isaiah 53. RESPONSE The Jewish man read of the one who was “wounded for our transgressions" . . . and by whose stripes “we are healed.” Amazed that this was not the New Testament, but his own Jewish prophet Isaiah, his preju dice was overcome.
