Welcome to Oklahoma City!

This year marks two national celebrations – the Route 66 Centennial and America’s 250th Birthday! Oklahoma City’s story is woven into both significant commemorations. Our country and city share a complex past filled with examples of grit and resilience that have nurtured our people and present. We are innovators, descendants and allies, influenced by both the past and the desire to make the future better for all. From Civil Rights icon Clara Luper to the 40th anniversary of Red Earth Festival, come join in the celebration of OKC’s distinctive roots and cultural diversity. In 1926, the Mother Road was built to connect rural America to urban centers, and 100 years later it still attracts visitors from around the world for a great American road trip. With nostalgic diners and photogenic landmarks, plus new, modern attractions, Oklahoma City’s stretch of Route 66 is as quirky and fun as the people you’ll meet along our 51 miles of the famous highway. In OKC, you’ll be greeted with an overflowing kindness as you discover our special blend of friendly Southwest hospitality. As one of America’s top 20 cities, you can explore nationally acclaimed dining and street art, cheer on your team in one of our world-championship sports venues or stroll like a local through our many districts. We invite you to enjoy the soul-stirring experiences that await you in Oklahoma City.

GET YOUR KICKS

As OKC celebrates 100 years of the Mother Road, new events and attractions are popping up throughout 2026. Check out the latest Route 66 news at VisitOKC.com.

A century ago, Route 66 became one of the first federal highways in the nation, stretching 2,448 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles. Right in the middle is Oklahoma, the state with the most drivable miles of the route and a capital teeming with roadside treasures. America’s Main Street is a main attraction in Oklahoma City, where the historic road weaves its way through neighborhoods and landmarks — past the only state capitol complex with oil derricks, along architectural marvels and through the only Asian district on the route. For the ultimate road trip in Oklahoma City, here’s where to get your kicks on Route 66.

TOWER THEATRE Aglow in neon, Uptown

STATE CAPITOL COMPLEX

23rd is a star thoroughfare on Route 66, and the Tower Theatre its lead actor. Open since 1937, the Art Deco icon originally

Rising over the Northeast side of OKC like a beacon,

the Oklahoma State Capitol was designed in classic Greco-Roman style by architect Solomon Layton and built of white limestone and pink granite between 1914 and 1917. And the capitol didn’t get a dome until 2002, capped with a Native American statue commemorating the state’s rich Indigenous history. Under the dome, visitors will find the largest public art galleries in Oklahoma. Be sure to visit the Tribal Flag Plaza, featuring flags representing the recognized tribes in Oklahoma, displayed around an earthen mound inspired by Spiro Mounds, the only prehistoric Indigenous archaeological site in the state.

served as a 1,500-seat movie house, drawing cinephiles for film premieres and screenings for decades. After closing in 1989, the property re- emerged in 2017 as a live music venue. Films occasionally still screen in the auditorium, along with traveling acts and themed events. Restoration efforts preserved the majesty of the building, including its neon sign, which still lights the way along 23rd Street.

OKC DISTRICTS Route 66 winds through several vibrant districts in OKC, each offering its own attractions and atmosphere.

CHEEVER’S CAFE Just down the street from the Tower Theatre, another Route

These include Uptown 23rd with eclectic photo-ops and dining, and the Asian District, dotted with dim sum parlors, bubble tea shops and Asian markets. The 39th Street District is the only gayborhood on the route, home to OKC’s most popular gay bars, clubs and an annual Pride festival. Other notable districts include the Adventure District, offering action-packed amenities like the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Remington Park and the OKC Zoo, and the Britton District, a postcard- perfect stretch of murals, shops, cafes and a distillery. And don’t forget to stop for photos at Will Rogers Theatre in the Western Avenue District.

66 icon has roots of its own. Cheever’s Cafe, ranked among

OKC’s best restaurants, has been serving contemporary Southern and Southwestern food since 2000.What makes the restaurant particularly notable is the fact that the first baby born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Belle Cunningham, was born in this very building — a former home that became a flower shop after the burgeoning businesswoman married Lawrence “L.L.” Cheever. The business closed in the mid-‘90s, but the 20-foot flower case remains (albeit instead of flowers, it’s wine and desserts), providing a unique opportunity to dine amongst OKC history.

MILK BOTTLE GROCERY Around the corner from Uptown 23rd, Classen Boulevard is another Route 66 corridor, lined with its own distinct and kitschy landmarks. Among the standouts is the Milk Bottle

THE GOLD DOME Among the preeminent pitstops on Route 66, the Gold

Dome — a few blocks south of the Milk Bottle — is a feat of architectural ingenuity. Constructed in 1958 as a bank building, it was one of the first geodesic domes used for commercial business, and among the few remaining geodesic domes in the world. Over time, it’s served as office space, an art gallery and a restaurant. It’s been dormant for years, but plans to redevelop the fabled building include transforming it into a concert hall.

Grocery, which finds a tiny sliver of a building crowned with a giant bottle of milk. The building itself, at just 350 square feet, has seen its share of businesses since its inception in the 1930s, from a fruit market to a barbecue shack. The milk bottle was added in 1948, to provide a fun photo op on Route 66, and as quirky promotion for the dairy industry. And it’s still just as photogenic today.

OKLAHOMA HISTORY CENTER Next door to the State Capitol building, the Oklahoma History Center is

LAKE OVERHOLSER BRIDGE A token of yesteryear, the northern shore of Lake Overholser houses its namesake bridge, constructed in 1924 to prepare for Route 66. Made of mixed trusses and stretching 748 feet, it’s as striking as the shimmering lake itself, and served as a primary portion of the route until a newer bridge was built in 1958. It closed for restoration in 2008, reopening in 2011 for local motor traffic, and it remains a nostalgic stop.

your one-stop shop for Sooner State lore. The 18-acre, Smithsonian Affiliate property, encompassing 215,000 square feet of exhibit space and more than 50 different topics of state history showcases numerous facets of Oklahoma, both past and present. Their Route 66 Collection in the free- to-visit Research Center, features countless photographs, documents and oral histories from the Mother Road.

PSST... HERE’S AN INSIDER TIP!

THE BIG SCREEN If it weren’t for the new releases, you might think you’d been transported back in time at the Winchester Drive-In . Ever since the summer of 1968, the outdoor theater has been a weekend tradition for friends and families who follow the vintage neon sign, Chester the Cowboy, to catch double features. The Winchester remains the only operating drive-in theater in OKC, and despite the fact that it plays modern-day movies, it looks utterly preserved in time — from the drive-thru ticket booth to the buttery popcorn. In Stockyards City, Rodeo Cinema is so historic that it makes the Winchester seem young. Originally built as a silent movie house in 1924, pre-dating Route 66 by two years, the single-screen theater now runs as a non-profit putting the spotlight on independent film. Today, it’s one of the most unique theaters in the city, showing occasional newer releases along with black-and-white oldies, Oklahoma-made films, documentaries and creative seasonal fare (like “Scooby-Doo” and “Night of the Living Dead” for Halloween).

ROADSIDE ICONS In OKC, some of the most eye-catching attractions have stories to share. Like the Lake Hefner Lighthouse , one of just two lighthouses in land- locked Oklahoma (the other is in Elk City), built in 1999 as a direct homage to the Brant Point Lighthouse in Nantucket. The latter was established in 1746 and still operates today, making it one of the oldest in the nation. Standing 36-feet-tall (which is 10-feet taller than Brand Point), with a working red light at the top, the Lake Hefner Lighthouse is designated as an official lighthouse by the Coast Guard, although its primary use is for photo ops and sunset backdrops. In the Wheeler District, the Wheeler Ferris Wheel had a Route 66 journey of its own. Before it soared over the Oklahoma River, offering panoramic skyline views, it stood on Santa Monica Pier, where it was featured in countless commercials and blockbusters, like Iron Man. When the pier switched to another model, they literally sold it on eBay to the Wheeler District for $132,400. Once disassembled, it traveled across the country, and underwent $1 million in renovations before opening in its new home in 2016. Nowadays, it’s a marquee attraction, surrounded by hammocks and an iconic “OKC” sculpture.
