The bed: the keystone of five- star comfort To find out about the key ingredients of comfort in an authentic luxury hotel, we spoke to the hotel’s accommodation manager Charlène Salignon, who for the past thirteen years has been responsible for maintaining the excellent standards of the Royal’s services and its 150 magnificent bedrooms. Rooms and suites are equipped with opulent mattresses bearing the legendary Elite logo that attests to their quality.
You mentioned vintage charm… Yes indeed; the 2015 renovations included the restoration of a unique collection of furniture and fittings dating back to when the hotel was built, including the brass chandeliers and in some suites, brass beds that give the interior a really majestic look. All these items blend in perfectly with more recent additions such as the large light oak wardrobes. How was modern comfort included ? Some of the most important items include parquet flooring in the entrances to the rooms and suites, carpets around the beds, lighting and power outlets designed for optimum comfort, king size beds (by no means standard in many places)
where you spend between six and twelve hours a day.
What are the advantages of this bedding ? First of all, the materials: the mattresses are made from pure sheep’s wool, which provides the best comfort imaginable. In addition, the combination of mattresses and mattress toppers allows us to meet the expectations of a wide range of individuals. If a guest wants a firmer bed, they can simply remove the topper: for those who prefer a softer bed, on the other hand, the latter is the ideal solution. What happens if the two partners in a couple don’t have the same preferences ? Both sides of these beds can be adjusted separately so as to suit the tastes of two people – that’s a huge benefit since increasingly, their needs do indeed differ. That’s standard practice in luxury hotels. The mattresses need to be turned over regularly to avoid sagging, and must be changed as soon as the first signs of wear appear. That must be quite expensive ! Yes, but then again the bed is the most important piece of furniture in a bedroom. Furnishings, leather and wood need to be restored from time to time depending on wear and tear, but the entire bed needs to be changed at regular intervals. What about duvets and pillows ? Here too, we offer a selection. Our pillows are made with sheep’s wool and feathers; and to give customers even more choice, we also offer a range of pillows including millet pillows, cooling pillows and butterfly pillows; each and every detail is important. Are the mattresses changed regularly ?
What makes the Royal’s rooms and suites so special ? First of all, there’s so much space. Our rooms are big, bright and beautiful, offering a remarkable combination of vintage charm and contemporary comfort. Their gentle shades of powder blue and pale yellow echo the natural surroundings, while the Carrara marble in the bathrooms is bathed in the natural light pouring in through the large windows. And of course, there are the views!
and of course bedding, mattresses and mattress toppers designed for enhanced comfort.
What kind of mattresses have you chosen ?
All our bedrooms are being equipped with Elite mattresses. 32 suites and 90 bedrooms already have them and the rest soon will; we’ve had excellent feedback from our customers. As I’ve already said, the bed is one of the most important things; after all, that’s
