The Department continues to benefit from contributions of its alumni and friends. Distinguished alumna, Mrs Joy Spence, CD (Hon DSc, Hon LLD), first international female Master Blender of the Spirits World, gifted the Department (through J Wray and Nephew) $J1.5M, for provision of analytical balances for undergraduate labo- ratories, and refurbishing of the Kenneth E Magnus (Unit Operations) Laboratory. Funds (J$3M) bequeathed by the late Professor Ellis (professor of Physical Chemis- try) was used to establish the “Henry A. Ellis Scholarship for Physical Chemistry” endowment. An annual scholarship is to provide support for an undergraduate student undertaking a degree in Chemistry with Physical Chemistry as part of their degree programme. The family of the late Professor Chan contributed USD2800 in continued support of the previously established Wilfred R Chan Undergraduate Prize in Chemistry, for 5 years (2023–2028). Dr Patrick Gordon, Fulbright Scholar (Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences) also made a donation of chemistry resource books and chemistry molecular models. The Department’s Occupational, Environmental Safety & Health (OESH) programme received a dona- tion of 10 pre-owned noise dosimeters, 1 sound level meter and two calibrators from visiting Adjunct Professor, Dr Gary Brown (Eastern Kentucky University, USA). Several repeat visitors from the University of Texas Austin continued their envi- ronmental research collaboration with, Dr Debbie-Ann Gordon-Smith and her graduate student, Ms Pearl Bergan. Mr Cesar Yammal toured the Pesticide Research Laboratory, and also held discussions on the Better Process Control School, in rela- tion to the Foundations for Competitiveness and Growth Project (FCGP), JANAAC and Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce (MIIC), geared towards the development of a coordinated laboratory strategic framework and implementation plan for Jamaica. Other industry visitors to the Department included: Ms Joy Spence (J Wray & Nephew), Mrs Sharonmae Shirley (JANAAC), and Ms Anna-Kay Dowie (Dairy Industries (Jamaica) Ltd.
